Fitting on gun port lids

Looking for some info on the fittings that would be on the inside of a gun port lid in reference to both half port and full port lids on the main deck and how the lids would be secured to keep them from opening. I have seen drawings with one or two eye bolts on the lower inside edge of a lid with a comment they were use to keep the lid closed but nothing showing how they were secured and to "what". Also I assume on the lower half port lid that there would be two eye bolts to allow the lid to pulled closed but how would the two halves have been secured. Hope someone can help.
