Katy of Norfolk-Model Shipways

In 1980 my grandfather Joe decided that it was time for 14 year old me to graduate from plastic models to wood models. After a trip to the local marine store, we returned with the yellow box of Katy of Norfolk from Model Shipways.

My grandfather taught me how to sand something smooth for finishing, make templates for the deck, etc. As happens, I went on to high school sports, etc. and I don’t know what became of our original effort.

I recently started back at the urging of my kids with the Lowell Grand Banks Dory and some half hull projects before feeling confident enough to take on my first rigged ship model.

The shortcomings of the kit have been commented on by those more qualified than me, but I was able to upgrade with the assistance of Syren Ship Model Company, Ropes of Scale,  and a practicum of a similar project from Lauck Street Shipyard. Many thanks to Vanguard Models for making their instruction booklets available online as they proved an invaluable aid in puzzling out “how to” when the limited instructions I had did not suffice. (I can’t wait to try one of their clearly superior kits next!)

Thank you to all of the members of Model Ship World. There is no way even this small effort is completed without all those who have shared their build logs, etc.
