1/50 Santa Maria by Billings Boats RESTORATION
This was a kit left uncompleted (at the rigging stage) by a person who had passed away and family members asked me to clean repair and complete it, she had been sitting in a dust attic for decades. My understanding is that Billings Boats no longer carries this kit and I can see why, she is a true clunker. Really ugly soft plastic blocks with moulded on eyes instead of stropping. A kit from the era before laser cutting, many of the components had the black ink of the "cut here" marks around their edges. As in all restorations, I had to stick to the course steered by the original builder so I have not corrected numerous faults of construction or placement of parts. Still, in her case she winds up looking pretty good for all that. But I would warn anyone from trying this kit, it has too many problems.

H.M.S.Pandora Mainmast
I wanted to build a very large model in order to show every bit of gear or rigging, but I live in an apartment which is too small for that sort of thing. So instead I built just the Main Mast of the H.M.S. Pandora to a large scale. I had the Anatomy of the Ship book on Pandora which has comprehensive spar and rigging information. I had a lot of trouble finding line in all the diameters I needed. The entire model is about eight feet tall including its base. Perhaps one day I will swap out the wood bench for a completely detailed hull section but this would be a difficult task.

H.M.S. Leopard
Scratch built solid hull model of H.M.S. Leopard of 1790 built to a scale of one inch equals seventeen feet. Built from the plans found in the book The 50-Gun Ship by Rif Winfield. Completed in August 2013

Le Renard, St malo
1/4" scale kit, I forget the manufacturers name. I completed this model about ten years ago. I have always include sails on my models, I believe they are essential and that a ship appears dead without them. Le Renard was a privateer cutter employed by Robert Surcouf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Surcouf
Working to 1/4 inch scale is great but the only subject that would fit in my apartment had to be something smaller so this cutter was perfect. I am not 100% sure about the rigging on this model, I think running the braces aft wouldn't allow much control since the lead is practically straight down. Leading them forward would add a lot of stress on the already much taxed and very busy bowsprit. Maybe they should have gone to the gaff peak.

H.M.S. Sophie
H.M.S. Sophie is a fictionalized version of Thomas Cochrane's H.M.S. Speedie, just as the fictional events in the novel Master and Commander are based on the actual events of Chochrane's early career. Scratch built with solid basswood hull, styrene plastic wood and paper, spars of bamboo.

H.M.S. Surprise
I'm a big fan of Patrick O'Brian and decided to build waterline shadowbox models of some of his ships all in the same nameless scale. I have completed Surprise and the brig Sophie and have been working on and off on H.M.S. Leopard. Surprise is about 8 1/4" B.P. and is made of basswood with paper sails.
