  1. Like many of you, I enjoy reading nautical history and fiction. I particularly enjoy the works of James Nelson and C.S.Forester but I'm always on the lookout for writers whose work I haven't read. Who are your favorites?
  2. In the teaching there is boundary setting. They learn what they can and can't do. That's what I meant by control. There are many other benefits to them from your interest in their development. Congratulations on your successful parenting.
  3. ASAT, I like the fact that the kids were schooled about tools and that they ask permission to be around the tools and workshop. I guess that's the kind of control one needs to protect kids from hurting themselves. Thank you for your comments. Jazzchip
  4. Thank you for the good ideas, Jack. I really like the use of cork. Very clever. I purchased a pair of gloves today. I have this fear that, given my lack of skills, it won't be long before I'm scratching my head with my wrist. Any ideas that reduce the chances of slicing off parts of myself are greatly appreciated. Jazzchip By the way doglover, Jazzchip is the combination of the names of our last two dogs-both in heaven, I assume.
  5. Thank you, druxey. Your comments will help me and all the other rookies. Jazzchip
  6. Scott, Great comments about your safety and your children's safety. I would like to hear more about this from other members. I think many new modelers would benefit. Thank you, Jazzchip
  7. Very wise, Jack. I like the idea of teaching them to respect the sharpness of the tools. Jazzchip
  8. I hadn't thought of this before but how do you protect children, grandchildren from getting hurt? Do you lock up your sharp instruments when they're around? Thank you, Davyboy for your comment.
  9. Thank you, Ryland. I was trying to decide which base to get and I thought the 312 was more versatile. That settles it. I appreciate your comments.
  10. I don't see much about safety in the forums in spite of the fact that we're working with sharp objects. Perhaps the issue should be given more attention. Thank you for your comments gentlemen.
  11. Keith, thank you for the warning and the good advice. I'm glad that Dad's injury healed. He was lucky.
  12. I knew a butcher who said the biggest danger was using a dull knife. Thanks, Jim.
  13. Hmmm. Maybe I should have taken up stamp collecting.
  14. Do you wear gloves when you are using sharp instruments? What kind? Being new to all this and inexperienced in carving, etc. I am concerned. A few minutes with sharp knives and I fear that I will bring new meaning to the term, "all hands on deck." Suggestions?
  15. I bought the Panavise 301 vise. I got a bit of a deal on ebay which made the decision a little easier. I want to thank all of you who responded to my question about a bench vise. It made the decision much easier. Jazzchip
  16. Seventynet, Thank you for the pictures and your comments. Proxxon and Panavise were the two with the most positive comments. I hope your next vise gives you years of trouble-free service. Your input was a big help to all of us who are looking for a good bench vise. Jazzchip
  17. Dr. Per, I'm not sure if what I wrote has been transmitted. I thank you for your comments. Panavise is a favorite among many of the respondents of NRG. I wish Consumer Reports would do a comparison of bench vises. There is obviously a strong interest in the subject judging by the number of people who have commented on my question. It's all been very helpful. Jazzchip
  18. ASAT,What a good idea. I hope it is distributed widely within NRG. Thank you for the suggestion and for your comments on Panavise. Jazzchip
  19. Thanks Jay for your contribution and interest in this issue. You've been a big help. Jazzchip
  20. Thank you Maury. Panavise gets mentioned a great deal. I appreciate the comment.
  21. Thanks, Jay. There is a small vise I saw that I'm considering. Tell the admiral that there's an advantage to your tracking wood chips. You're easy to find. Thanks again for your photos and input. Jazzchip
  22. By the way, looking at your desk I can tell you that you're a lot more organized and neater than I am. If I had a 3 lane highway to spread my tools out, it wouldn't look as neat as your desk.
  23. Sure, it can be small. As long as it can handle the tasks involved, it doesn't matter what size it is. What would you suggest, Jay?
