If you look at the original discussion of my visit to Chatham at http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/10370-18th-and-early-19th-century-cutter-models/?p=310192 you'll see that this oddness was the result of an accident at the museum which was not reported and which was probably clumsily fixed by the person who dropped it -- probably not even knowing that it was a sail. You can clearly see the broken knot at the other end of the yard.

Not only is this unimaginably skilled work, as well as beautiful, it is also wonderfully photographed against a great backdrop that gives a sense of the majesty of the original.

It was used to carry from the store to the table where they were showing me the variety of cutters. I don't know why the others weren't tied down in the same way. Perhaps it was considered more fragile.
