So what's wrong with it? I am new to wood models and am currently working on the Rattlesnake and I can tell you yours looks better than mine.

Thanks guys. I've decided not to bother with the practicums at this time. Got the Rattlesnake today. Missing at couple of parts, but I've contacted MS. I won't need them for a while. since I won't be working on the rigging yet. I have everything except an overhead light and wax paper. And time. Leonard

Thanks for the welcome guys. As for the trip to Boston- time is the main issue. My son and I can only spare a few. He's saving as much of his vacation as he can for his upcoming honeymoon and I'm saving what I can for my trip to see my older son. We're thinking we can squeeze in a few days for this trip though. I work three twelves at the moment leaving me four days off a week so I think I can do a two day trip. One day for the ship and one for the museum. There's a lot more to see, I know, but I do what I can. Actually, going to Boston for any amount of time is pretty good for a paranoid old curmudgeon like me. lol Leonard

Thanks. Apparently I used the wrong search phrase. I've seen where a few people used them but nothing definitive about the actual practicum. I'm thinking I'll just save my money to use on the Constitution kit and just use the build logs here and see how many times I can make the same mistakes. lol Leonard

I've searched the site for a review on this but can't find anything so I apologize if this has been asked before. I've been to the lauckstreetshipyards website and these practicums seem to be pretty sweet, but are they worth the money? I know, I know, price is relative, but to anyone who has used them, was it worth your money? Never having built a POB before, I'm wondering if it's simple enough to guide me through the process. I'd like to see a review on any of them. The website special for $200 actually looks like a good deal. Any thought? Leonard

About to start my first wooden ship- the Rattlesnake. Over the last 50 years I've built 3 sailing ships that I can remember. My first was the Golden Hind(no rigging and given to my grandmother). The next two were plastic 1:96 scale. Not sure what happened to the first and can't really remember how far along I got. I was a teenager with lots going on. The second was a few years after I got married to a woman with cats. One of them loved to play in the rigging. Now I plan on learning with the Rattlesnake and then I'll do one more Constitution. One thing I'm thinking about for the Rattlesnake is a diorama. I see few models of sailing vessels displayed this way. It's something to consider. One thing I do plan on doing before I start the Constitution is to go up and actually see it in MA. Not sure if my wife and daughter-in-law will go but my son said we could go for a couple of days. I don't plan on putting a build log on here, mainly I doubt if there's anything I could show you guys besides my mistakes, but who knows down the road. When I ordered my the kit from Model Expo, I had a chance to talk the the guy there and he directed my to this site. Seemed like a real nice guy and I'm glad he sent me here. Looking forward to the experience.

For Beginners -- A Cautionary Tale

Just joined and want to say I agree with a lot of you here. I don't plan a posting a build log, but I do plan on reading a lot. I've been building models for 50 years but still consider myself a beginner. I've attempted two of the 1:96 scale Constitutions years ago. Not sure what happened to the first(too many years ago) and another in my late 20's. Cat liked the second one. Cat lived, but the model didn't. Most of my other modeling was Star Trek and Star Wars related. Model Shipways Rattlesnake will be my first wooden ship, to be followed by my last Constitution build. Rattlesnake( I know, too elaborate, but it's already bought) will be my intro into POB and the Constitution because it's the baddest ship we built. It's the epitome of Americanism. I have no interest in building most of the others out there. If I were 30 or 40 years younger I might, but this is something I've wanted to do for years and now that I'm nearing retirement, I'll now have time - I hope. I've been a woodworker most of my life and so I have most of the tools I need so that's not an issue. I have a lot of the skill sets I need as well. Now to find out if I still have the patience.
