  1. Mark I had it all along. Exactly what I needed and will need is in The Rigging of Ships in The Days of the Sprintsail Topmast 1600-1720, by RC Anderson. Thanks to you all.. Bill
  2. Thanks Jan.. I will look around at various pictures but pictures are from the artist's perspectives and oftertimes are inaccurate as well.
  3. Thank you all for your time and replys. The galleon I am currently building is from 1558 and a Spanish Galleon. I see (again) the manufacturer has made a error. Will it never end??? Bill
  4. Does anyone know approximately when violin blocks (aka fiddler blocks) were used on galleons? I remember reading maybe in somewhere in the 1700's. Bill

  7. Hi all, I am looking for info on the galleon construction proportions used to determine lengths and thicknesses of masts and yards for the years 1500 - 1600. I have read "The Rigging of Ships in The Days of The Sprintsail Topmast 1600 - 1720" by R.C. Anderson. That's as close as I can get to the desired time period. Anybody got more accurate info?
  8. Not yet but thats a good idea. Let me try.. Morw later.
  9. Louie thank you for your response and you are correct. Infortunately I only speak one language, and its not Spanish. I could not find this version in English. Also it it my understanding from my readings that this 1st treaties was superceded 4 years later by still another treaties. And 4 years after that by another one. Anyway, I'll keep looking amd trying to make sense of this crazyness. ))) Regards, Bill
  10. Hi guys, I have found plenty of data on Mast Spars and Rigging sizes on English galleons, but little or no data on Spanish Galleons 1500 - 1800. Can anyone provide me with any reference material on this topic? Thanks in advance, Bill
  11. Hi guys, I have started the old San Francisco S XVI. completed the hull assembly, in fact I still have a few pieces to go on the bow area. I was thinking how, and if there is a way, to stress relieve the hull once its assembled. I and not a carpenter, I I have stress relieved metal after welding steel. Anybody know about stress relieving wood? Thanks in advance. Bill
  12. In my opinion the company has very poor customer service. I emailed them myself and got only an email the asked "what do you want"
  13. Are you going strictly by the company instructions, or do you have other resource info? Bilp
  14. Thanks Roger. I have read Chapelle's articles, and I agree with him and you. The San Juan is one of the Manila Galleons that I plan to build. Its on my list.) Right now my research is focused on San Francisco (1597). But I happened to see the Pavel model and thats why I asked. More later. Bill PS I still have my doubts about the appearance of Pavel. But I'll keep an open mind.
  15. Thanks Derek. I habe good sources but, as usual, only about hull length and beam dimentions, ratios etc. After building the San Martin and the San Marcus (same era) I doubt if the San Bartolome was built that fancy. Spain had money issues and were building 11 other ships, so money was "kinda thin". Bill But I will keep looking for sure.
  16. Chris I am looking for authernticity. Many of the models I see, in this era and Spanish galleons or naos are not accurate. This one looks very fancy for a ship built in 1589 or so. Back then they didnt even have electric saws. Hahahah
  17. I just discovered this model last night. My question is, is it authentic or just a fancy model? Bill
  18. Does anyone have experience with Pavel Models? I am thinking about buying one.
  19. Hi all, How do I access the site database that has various charts and graphs etc.? Bill
  20. Doc the 80 or 90 percent of the length of the main mast, either one, is more than twice the beam of th3 ship. Over....?
  21. Hi guys, I have read, and read, and read somemore, but I keep getting different answers from each book. One book tells me the lower main spar should be 90% of the main mask length. Another book tells me it should be 80% of the main mast. Still another book tells me it should be 7/8th of the main mast, and finally one book says "if the main spar is more than double the ships beam its too long". Shall I jump off the bridge now or is there a correct answer. I am building a ship from the 15th century, a Carrack. Bill
  22. Jan, The little info I have found today agrees with you. Looking at pics of Santa Maria (same time period) shows the carrack with lashings and no cap. Finding info of ships in the 1400s is tough! Anderson' book "The Rigging of Ships" is as early as I can find. Thank you all for your advice. Bill
