  1. Hi everyone, I've been fascinated by model ships for some time now. Helped a little bit by the Art Gallery of Ontario and their amazing collection. I'm not a modeler but a little 'handy'. Hopefully that translates. I also don't have the spare time I'd like and progress is very slow. But I really enjoy the respite I get when I do get the chance to work on my model. I was ready to dive into the Bluenose but found the Model Expo series and I've built the Grand Banks Dory and currently am working on the norwegian sailing pram. I might do a build log for the next one. I don't know what you guys think of this series but I really appreciate the baby steps and have learnt alot such as: - Patience is a virtue - Small mistakes can multiply - Some mistakes don't matter that much - My wife doesn't care about my progress - Keep rechecking your symmetry -The kits and instructions aren't perfect - I barely know anything yet. The forum seems to be incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and supportive and I look forward to the opportunity to participate. Happy building, everyone!
  2. Thanks, Jaager. I think you're right. I was thinking of stain as more of a dye but worried about the affect of the oil. But a little reading about linseed oil says that it actually polymerizes as it dries and would affect the surface (all woodworkers rolling their eyes now). I'll be gluing my parts before any surface treatments. I'm also planning on painting my pram, partly to hide the imperfections if nothing else. You guys know your stuff!
  3. I'm building the same kit and I'm at about the same stage as you. You've done a really nice job so far. Honestly, I kind of like the stain as it is. It gives it a used, weathered look but that may not be what you're going for. The floorboards and seats will cover a lot of the imperfections up. Also, you still have several hull supports, etc. to add and this might make it difficult to match the color. And I'm not sure how pre-staining a part affects how well the glue holds. I'd be curious if the more experienced builders had any insight on this. Keep up the good work!
