4 Strong Winds

Preparing to bend my gunwales I decided to use push pins to create the shape and provide a clamping backing to hold the strips in place as they dry. I have never done this before so I will have to wait and see if it works. Well there it is pinned in place and I sank the head right onto the top of the two rails for extra holding power. Now just wait for them to dry up...........

Well I am guessing but I assume that the transom needed to be planed down so plane it I did! I really like that Veritas mini block plane, it works really fast on that plywood. I’m attempting to get ready for planking the hull and I haven’t a clue on what I’m doing and I admit I’m beginning to fade in confidence in my own judgment. Let’s see what happens……. Oh! I have reassembled the boat after fixing a few things. .

I have recently acquired a Billing’s Boats model 576 of the Fishing Vessel Bluenose and I have to say that the instructions certainly do not fill me with confidence about this build. A little history, the boat came to me as a partial build from a fellow who acquired it from the original buyer/builder so I’m the third owner of the boat. After spending some time looking at the boat and studying it’s construction I’m almost regretting ever getting it. What looks ok at a glance becomes a poor start as I studied it. I noticed that some things were broken, parts not meeting up completely and so on. So after a bit of deliberation I have decided to partially disassemble the boat and try to fix them as best as I’m able. I have never built a boat before but I am/was a finish carpenter with what’s left of a decent eye and good hands so I undertook the disassembly with care and I managed to break the glue joints with patience and finesse. There was a spot or two where the deck didn’t touch the bulkhead thus making it seem to have shorter Stanchions than the rest of its mates on the raised aft deck which looked really bad to me. Anyway I currently have the deck removed and the glue cleaned up and I’m ready to get going on it again. The following pictures are how received the boat

Nice bit of history. I haven’t followed the lawsuit because I didn’t know about it. I do remember when the Nova Scotia government purchased the boat, I’m sure that they regretted spending those ten - ten cent pierces (dimes to my American friends) however I remember donation cans placed in many stores and so on for funds to maintain her when I was a lad and I sailed on her in 1974 (a story attached to that experience) so I did a bit of research and she was purchased from the Oland’s family in 1971 not 1979. I moved from Nova Scotia to Alberta in 1990 I think, so I was out of touch with the local news so that’s what fuelled my ignorance about her and the lawsuit I guess.

It sure helps to know what you can do with glue to make it give in without taking a big chunk of “oh no!” along with it. I’m hoping to be able to get some assistance on the process of building the boat as I had mentioned before I’m struggling with the instructions that came with the package.
