I’ve been away from ship modeling for quite some time but have been getting back into with my youngest son. I’ve got both the Jim Byrnes table saw and his thickness sander, both of which have remained idle for far too long. We started milling some lumber on my bandsaw - pieces of an old apple tree and pear tree, and when I fired up the thickness sander for the first time, the drum barely rotated. I hadn’t used it a great deal before, so before I start taking it apart is there recommended maintenance I need to be doing to keep it in top form other than normal cleaning? It’s been years, so I don’t recall, are the lubrication points for bearings, etc?- 1 reply

I'm looking for any information on archeological finds of the 70 gun Third Rate Anne, which sank off the coast of Hastings in 1690. She was built by Phineas Pett II in 1678, and I'm assuming her framing and construction details would have been very similar to that of a Third Rate built in 1706. I've just purchased Richard Endsor's book, "The Warship Anne", https://www.amazon.com/dp/1844864391/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IA76WH956LJWS&colid=2EF88C11KQRNO but I'm not sure how much of the archeological information is covered. Hello All, I didn't know where else to share this, but as a nautical history buff, I figured it's probably in this section. In my research over the years into the 70 gun Third Rate Elizabeth, having read her Captain's and Master's logs, I found that she was part of Admiral Shovell's last fleet command in the Mediterranean in 1707. As an artist and cartoonist, I've always gotten a kick out of the 'perfected' versions of the individuals being painted, and at the National Maritime Museum, there's a portrait of Admiral Shovell in a suit of black armor. From the accounts I've read, the Admiral enjoyed a fullness of body, if you follow me, and was by no account a thin person as depicted in the painting. From that starting point, I'd created a digital painting of what a drunk cartoonist might have ended up with, had he had the recklessness tp paint the Admiral with total abandon. It's my first digital painting, and you'll have to forgive the inaccuracies in the ship's masting and rigging - but here it is:

Hello All, I've recently downloaded the latest version of Sketchup and intend to start working on some plans. I apologize if some of my questions have been covered elsewhere or if it becomes immediately obvious that my ambitions far exceed my potential skill, but here goes. First, is there a way to import a scanned (jpeg or other type of image file) of a plan into Sketchup to begin adding lines, etc.? Also, is there anyone here that is using Sketchup for a 2D set of plans to develop framing and working drawings for a ship model? I've seen quite a few 3D discussions, but someone's step-by-step approach - sort of a "Ship Model Plans In Sketchup For Dummies" - with me being the dummy, would be hugely helpful.
