Hi all my mates and friends
Ist time for a update. I did the cannon rigging completely, but I think I will have to redo some of them guns. I am not satisfied with all rigging so perhaps two or three ropes well be renewed. But all in all I say - for the first time with no instructions within the instruction sheet in the kit it Looks quite good. Thew next time I have some expierence and can avoid mistakes that happend now.
Next will be to install the stairs to the foredeck, the pumps and to cover the hull with semi-gloss lacquer. With my first build, the Half Moon, I use ordinary stuff from the DIY-market and was very very satisfied. So I will not Change the procedure for the Caroline. This I will do agftere the Weekend ( I will spend my weekend with my father in Switzerland).
CU all - and as always: Comments are welcome.
Thx to all for all the fantastic "likes" I get :D

Hello my friends,
it is time for a very small update. I am doing the cannon rigging at the Moment - and well: It is a fiddly fumbling. Nevertheless I am sure I will get along with it. The instructions provided with teh kit do not Show the rigging and so I went along in the Forums an found quite a lot of helpful advices. I will try to turn them into reality. I attached some pice to Show you my first attempts. I hope the results can be called ok although I know that the results are not as good as many others I saw. But I am still learning There are no coils there, I will do them at the end. So please dont be too critical with my guns , but help me with some hints to make it better.
The last pics Show the anchors - first with a mistake I made - thank you AVBiker for your mail - an my repair of the mishap.
@schnu The breed is called Segugiuo Italiano - hunting Dogs from Italy for rabbits. But I am not a hunter and my Little Girl Comes from the animal welfare.

Thanks for your Attention

Hello my friends and fellow followers
Well, the fun with my Caroline goes on. After my Holidays with my dog I did continue to build up the deck furniture and to prepare eg the cannons and anchors. But at the Moment I have to wait for additional parts like double-blocks for the cannon rigging, for some Wood as I want to create my own chain-wales. I ordered the parts but they are not delivered. But I expect to get them today. The cannons come out quite good, I did burnish the brass muzzles.
Next will be to seal the decks with a semi-gloss colorless lacquer before I install the cannons and do the cannon rigging.
It is so nice and satisfying to build this kit...
Have a nice time
Best wished ... and: Cheerio

Hello my friends,
I am back again. I had a wonderful Relaxing time with my Mila in the Austrian Alps (Pic 2). Perfect weather conditions, time for hiking, sitting on the balcony and watch the mountains, just doing nothing but enjoy (Pic 1) .... But this time has gone now, and my shipyards waiting for me. So I will continue with my Royal Caroline the next days. Still have to manage the gun rigging.
So best wishes to all of you

Hello my friends
just a little update from the past few days. I just build up the deck furniture (?) like the different bits, chimney, gratings, stairs etc...
Now as I learned a method to "carve" the bollards I am quite satisfied with the result. I use a triangle file and not longer a knife. I am sure you guys just laugh about my "discovery" - but I found out this by myself... almost a little bit proud *blush* :D
The last three pics are somehow experimental as I love to play with photos/photography. Perhaps they look a bit strange... hope you dont mind
I am on tour with my Caroline for almost five months now (approx 250 hrs minimum)
Cheerio, cu - and as always: Comments are welcome as I want to get better...

Hi my friends,
just a few pics as update. Finished the boat-holder so far, but I did not glue it yet. I Need free space to work on the deck for the cannons. Not until that I will fix the gang-way. Actually the stand for the boat-holder should be painted in red - but I decided not to paint it. I like the natural Wood-look more.
@schnu you are right - the time would have been here to use steer-wheels. Perhaps they used a tiller as it is "only" a yacht ?

Hello all
time for another little update. The pics show some Details, as I went on the way to more constructions on the deck and the rudder. Long time ago I planked the ruddeer as I dont want to Keep it in the delivered way. Just some varnish is not enough as I wanted to see some structure or texture of the Wood. So I used the strips of Wood for the second planking. Now I know what a thinkness of 1 mm can do ... as I used a strip on every side of the rudder it made 2mm - and that made the hinges NOT fit. Ok, I carved the planks and mounted the hinges. I think it looks quite ok... The gratings and the skylight (translator ??) were done without problems.
I hope you like the pics and - as always - dont hesitate to tell me your opinion and to give me hints when you see errrors.

Hello everybody...
a little update: I did the staircases ... on portside it is a solutiuon to close the gap between the stairs and the cabin just with some planks and a left-over piece of the castings as decoration; on starborad I designed a little door (to a locker room or a storeroom ) I admit that I like the starboard more, but I will leave it as it is and will not change.
Next step will probably be to fix the chainplates and deadeyes. I removed all plates again and will fix the deadeyes before I glue the plates onto the hull again. Its better to work this way as the chainplates provided with the kit are NOT the best. I will build up some own, but thats tricky and will better be done before fixing the plates to the hull. First of all all metal parts have to be colored in black (the translator says the english word is "to brown" ... not sure if this is right... I will do it with the cannons too)
Cu and as always in this theatre

Hello to you all...
It's tiume for a Little update and some more pics to show the progress. The work goes on... time after time a new part gets on its place and give an Impression how the entire ship could look some far away day. I go most strictly along the plan, just chancing the order of the steps a Little bit. But this is not important as Long as the order gives any sense to the work.
After all the brass decorations -I colored the brass with a semi-gloss gold-enamel, after that I used some black dust to accent the molding - I started to build all the constructions on the deck. First are the two staircases. Well I needed three attempts until I can say - it is ok now. The chain plates (???? not sure for the Translation) that will fix the deadeyes do NOT fit anyway. I decided to buy some other ones, eps some that match to the ones Mr Mondfeld recommends. I ordered them and wait for them almost every day.
Thats it for the Moment, as always pls dont hesitate to tell if you see something wrong. All comments are welcome as I want to learn more and more. Still it is just my second ship...
Best wishes to all

Hello again
@schnu: Thank you very much
My build goes on step by step - and nothing problematic so far. Really tricky is the bending of the brass strips for the Galion. The material is quite solid and it Needs a lot of Patience to get the brass into the correct shape. But at least it works. So i needed two evenings for just one side - including sanding and polishing the metal. But as I do not like the very bright and glossy natural brass Color I decides to paint all brass parts with a golden enamel. (This you can see on the first pics). After painting the decoration parts it Needs about two days to dry completely. I am a Little bit worried about the plans as they do NOT Show how to bend the strips. It would not be wrongf to find some more Details in the plans or photos. I am glkad that I found a site in the WWW, where just the Panart RC is shown in a very good built condition. But at least this should be found in a good plan.
Nevertheless all works good and to search and find is a part of modelling
I think I will Need two further evenings on the bow. Next will probably be the Stern with all the brass decorations too.
Enjoy the pics and - as always - any comment is welcome. I am learning more and more although I am not so much active in writing or commenting other builders logs. But I am looking

just a Little update and a few pics. The work on the Royal Caroline takes ist progress, nothing special to report. The build is satisfying and there is a lot of fun to watch the ship grow. The blue in the pictures looks a little bit too brillant - in reality it is not so much "blue".I have a lot of joy and I am always interested to hear your comments. I want to improve my modelling...

Hello to all out there...
just another small update.
I have done the second planking completely. Although the Teak may be unusual I think it comes along quite good. Still I am thinking about wether to paint the hull below the waterline white or not. Got some time left to decide...
Next part will be to plank the false keel and the bow, then I will build the windows. Before I fix the windows and the rear parts I will paint the upper side of the ship in blue.
As usual some pics are attached. Have a nice time and a good buliding - wherever you are

Hi all...
the planking of the Royal Caroline takes good progress. As I mentioned I have changed the wood provided with the kit and bought some teak. Well, I like this wood very much but now I am not sure anymore that it is the best choice for a hull's planking. I will do it till the end and not change once more, but the next time I will have some walnut again. I think this is the best solution for a hull. As the RC is very much decorated and as I will probably paint the lower hull white it will not be so conspicuous.
The work itself is very satisfying, nearly no problems or much effort to get the strips bent. At least two weeks will have gone when I am ready with the second planking. Next will be to plank the stern completely, to finish the very small parts of the inner planking and to clean all.
Some pics will show the progress at the moment.

Hello my friends,
the RC make quite good progress, but it is a slow step by step... Its summer, its warm outside, its Brazil football time, and by the way I have to go to work...
But the time in my shipyard nevertheless is very satisfying and relaxing. I am sure you all know what I am talking about
The first planking is done, also sanding and filling the very few gaps. The first planking was not really a problem, everything worked good. But I changed the sequence of the building as I planked the inside before I started the second planking. I finished all decks, all inside planking, painting and I fixed some eye bolts for the cannon rigging on the inside and on the decks. In the plans there is no reference how to rig the cannons and obviousely the rigging is not scheduled by the kit. But I will do it and got a lot of information in the MSW and of course by Mr Mondfeld I do not understand why the manufacturer of the kit, Panart, does not recommend to rig the cannons. It is in a big scale, 1:47, and every detail can be shown very good. Well, I do it by myself.
Also I decided to buy some additional wood to replace the original so called walnut stripes for the second planking. They just look terrible and are just poor quality - in contrast to the other inclosed wooden material. I found a model wood dealer in the WWW who not only sells the wood but also has a big variety of differnet wood and who can precisely manufacture the needed stripes. I decided to order some Teak, 1mm thick and 6mm wide. The wood is from very good quality and I am very content.
I started with the second planking now and I expect to be busy with it for more than a week. I want to do a very good surface
I added some pics - and as always I am very grateful for any hint to do it better.

Hello my friends
just a new update. The building of the Royal Caroline takes a lot of time... and the summer is around, so it last a Little to do the next step
But I can do some work like the inside planking and coloring. I use the Admirality Paint from Jotika. I think the red ochre fits the model quite good.
Next step will be sanding the hull and then start the second planking.

Hello to all...
a little update once more... takes ist time at the Moment as the weather is perfect for beeing outside and not sitting in the shipyard. So I only make small progress - but there is no need for urge...
I started the first layer of Planks and could not wait to use trhe template for the Windows and gunports
I have to say - there was no real problem so far. Everything fits on ist place, the technique to Color the decorations seems to work very good - I used clear lacquer on the graved timber and then all with waterbased blue Color. When it was dry I sanded all very carefully and smooth with 600 sand paper (grain size???) At last I usedn some golden enamel on the non-blue parts. So I will do at all decorations of this kind. The finish will be with silken clear lacquer as I used on my Half Moon.
BTW... the colkor of the Planks for the second layer is terrific... I will stain it - has anyone an idea what Color I should take? I thought about a mixture of light walnut and Teak - very much diluted.
Thats it for today - comments are welcome, as they are always..

Hello all...
here is a little update. I have planked the bulkhead of the cabin and I made the doors and windows. This was the first time for me to work with wood on such difficult and small parts. I have now much more respect of all of you who do such work with extreme accuracy.
It was right to move the planking of the cabin and the work on the doors to this point. I am sure when you go along with the plan you will drive crazy with this work. After the Planks are in place and much more stuff is already fixed on the deck there is so less space to work proper. So I only can recommend - to such of you who are not experts - to read the plans exactly before starting to build. You will find ways to get along with the model in much more calm and satisfying ways. I stained the Planks of the cabin with oak and think it has a nice Color now. Now I can continue with the first planking.

Hello again...
I have a Problem. The Windows and doors of the Royal cabin are not prefabricated (never want this...) But the parts have to be placed and fixed on the cabin wall - better in the cabin wall. Before this the wall has to be planked. Now my Problem: Should I plank and place the parts BEFORE I plank the hull? Pls Keep Attention to my pics...
The plan says it has to be done later. But later the hull is closed and I can NOT use my fingers or other Tools to build the doors and Windows within the cabin wall. But I think ist helpful to have the Chance to go through the hole in the hull to work on Windows and doors. But I do not want to make a irreversible mistake - although I can not imagine what this could be. But many of you have so much expierence to help me...
The planking of the deck and the inner side of the hull would not be any Problem to be done now...
Pls help me

Hello again
I started to plank the Royal Caroline. First were the decks - as mentioned before. I fixed the decks and sanded all to a nice and soft matte Color.
Due to my (small) knowledge of italian language I can follow the plans quite good. The translations are somewhere between funny and ridiculous So I could begiun to fix the Planks on the Frames. Up to now I had only some small Problems like the size of some parts that Needs to be improved. If they are too big... well take a knife, a saw oir some sanding paper. But if they are too small - like the deck of the royal cabin... hmmm... I will find a solution
As usual some pics...
btw: I am really glad to have this Proxxon vice... Ist like my third and fourth Hand...

Hello my friends
just a little update. I am working at the preparation of the planking. The frames meanwhile are glued, the stern has ist first planking, the maindeck is planked with the very bright strips. I tried to show the caulked deck. Therefore I used a pencil and marked the edges of the strips very soft. I think it looks quite good - not to strong but visible. No problemns yet - everything fits good and can be worked out very easily.

Hello all
Well I started the building of der Royal Caroline today. The pics show the first steps, still not glued, only dry fitting. The first impressions of the kit are really good. All parts are well designed, well packed, nothing was damaged in any way, nothing is missing. The building instructions are in a very cute language... a kind of German - but I understand Italian good enough to use the original instructions. The English translation is better than the german one.
The timber is very good Quality, two different kinds of plywood plates. The cutting is exactly, only very few need to sand or improve the precut parts as far as I can say up to now. I think it will be a fun to build the RC but of course it will be a challenge for me.
I will report constantly, attached some pics of the first steps-

Hi Ffolks
as I mentioned in my log "Galeone Roter Löwe" I changed my plans for my second build. I originally wanted to build the Roter Löwe by Mamoli, but the kit is not available at the moment. So I decided to start with the Royal Caroline by Panart. The parcel was delivered today. All I can say is "Wow". The box is filled with timber of all Kind, size and Color. There are strips, plywood, Fittings, brass cast, ropes... Four big plans full and overfull with drawings and a booklet with some Kind of instructions.
I will try to get an overview now. I think I will start soon with my second wooden model ship

Not too much to show about the work done since my "meteorological disease" has finally finished with the end of the rain: during this week I installed the "considerable" number of "nine" strakes of planks on the right side of the hull.
I publish below some pictures just to show something, but I do not think they are very enlightening.
In particular there are two aspects of some interest:
a) the first, positive, aspect is in the areas of midship and aft. The planking is growing very well, without the need of tapers and with the joints between the planks of total satisfaction and
the second, I would say negative, at the bow, where even in the presence of planks strong tapering, it is impossible to apply strights strips; here you should design planks starting from preformed strips probably 2.5-3cm wide and cut them accordingly to the shape of the hull. A job that involves an incredible waste of timber and without practical effects as it is expected the second planking.
So I adopted the technique to install some planks so that they follow their natural curvature on the hull even if this forces to end the strip earlier, with a diagonal cut. I remember the the process of preparing "ad hoc" planks would be much easier with the second planking due to the planned use of sheets of veneer from where can I get the due shape in the easiest way. Furthermore, to explain why also this efforts could be unuseful, under the waterline there will be the copper plates, so everything becomes a theoretical exercise because all this work will result invisible.
Usually every three/four strakes applied, I sand them in order to advance in parallel the planking and its sanding. This costs me less efforts than doing all the sanding the end and allows me to verify periodically the work done. In addition, since it's a matter to lose only few minutes, I avoid the temptation to use power tools that are usually very efficient but also very dangerous if their use is not careful and could result in damaging the work done: here I prefer the old-fashioned manual process.
Another trick that I usually adopt, is to pass a brushstroke of diluted PVA on the planks, this dries almost immediately and helps to seal better the grooves between the strakes and strengthens the wood surface. It is a little trick and/or fixation that probably every modeller holds in his past experiences.
Now, however, I have no more excuses: the next activities are to get the same results on the left side of the model. In fact I cannot proceed on this side with the planking otherwise my building slip is no longer usable. I prefer, once finished the left side, use this building slip and his undeniable stability to apply the deck planking: a new and stimulating experience. .
Sincerely, Jack.Aubrey.

Disaster!
While pushing in a pin to hold a plank in place, i used to much force on the keel. It snapped off all along te rabet and the joints.
I must take a mental note to always dowel the keel on future builds.
I gently putted the model aside, and didn't look at it for more then a week or so.
