  1. The first time I worked on this kit, I used a color scheme the same as the USS Constitution as I love the look of that ship. Here are some photos of the first attempt: And now the new effort using the same idea of the color scheme from the previous attempt: But then I found out about the book by Portia Takakjian - Anatomy of the Ship - The 32 Gun Frigate Essex. I purchased the book and decided I would rather use this book as a more thorough guide to what the real Essex actually looked like. Has anyone used this book as a guide to building the Essex?
  2. This is my first build log, so any advice on what I should know about posting would be well appreciated. This is my third kit build. I'm starting this log well into the construction, so if that is a non-starter just let me kown. (Actually started this kit before, many years ago and never finished. I decided to start from scratch once again.) I'll share some photos I have taken so far along the way. Here is the kit before I started: I choose to modify the kit by carving out the hull to allow adding the gun deck. Here are some photos of that stage: I'll make a separate post on further progress to keep the post shorter. Again, any advice is welcome!
  3. Thanks Mark & Snug Harbor Johnny. I'll look into both suggestions.
  4. Can anyone help me with a question. Maybe there is somewhere I should be looking on this site for info so just let me know if there is. The 5/64 scale Essex frigate kit I am working on has long been discontinued. I would like add some additional cannons. Do you think there is any way for me to get more? They are britannia metal. The old Model Shipways catalog I have has them listed as items 54A & B. The cannon is 5/8" long and he carriage is 3/8" long. I haven't found anything comparable in current catalogs. I think I will contact Bluejacket to see if they might have any, but I thought I would ask here first. Do you think there is any chance of me finding some more? If there is a better way for me to ask this type of question just let me know as I'm new to this site.
  5. I'm a new member but have some experience with model ship building. Completed Model Shipways projects are the Forester and the Mary Taylor. Years ago I was about half done with the Model Shipways Essex - 1799 Scale: 5/64. I attached some photos of that effort. Never finished due to life getting in the way. I recently retired so I now have more time. I found an old Essex kit on E-bay, that was surprisingly complete, and I'm now starring over again. This time I have carved out the lower deck and plan to fit it with cannons from the first model. I hope I haven't screwed it up. We'll see. I attached some beginning photos of the current project. I haven't found anyone on the forum that has completed this scale model of the Essex. Would love any completed model photos, advise or pointers as I work on this. Attached are some photos of my completed Mary Taylor as well. Looking forward to my new "retirement" activity. Once I complete this project I'm thinking about getting the Model Shipways Constitution. I completed the Revell Constitution model when I was in my 20's and would love to build a wood version now. Looking forward to participating on this forum.
