Armed Virginia Sloop Questions

Recommended Posts

First of all, Hi, I’m new to all this so if this is the wrong spot to ask this I apologize. I recently ordered the Armed Virginia Sloop by Model Shipways, and I have two questions regarding my plans on building it. I have two questions and hope someone can help me out.

1) I understand this model is based off designs used around 1770-1800 (I think), would it be reasonable to model this ship as a ship taken by pirates? I would like to make it a pirate ship, but if this is something that couldn’t have happened let me know.

2) Second question is concerning the paint scheme of it. If the answer to my first question is yes, than I assume that a pirate could paint his ship any colors he wants. But assuming the answer to that question is no, what are some other historical paint schemes this ship could of had. I love the look of the ship, but the paint job it is shown with I’m not a fan of.

(I think this is right this time)

That is the great thing about ship modeling, it is yours to decide. Do some research on the history of your particular ship model. What was going on in the seas at that time etc. When I did my USS Constitution, I read a book "Old Ironsides" by Gillmer. He relayed that the captain who was in command, could make any alterations he felt necessary, including the color scheme. You are the captain! Have fun...
