Welcome to my first build log!  I consider this my first full build because I did once finish a model of the Chesapeake Bay Flattie (also by Midwest) that my brother had started. So this is my first time building a model start to finish. I bought this kit a few years ago, getting as far as a first coat of paint on the hull, and I just pulled it out of the closet again a few days ago. As you can see, I'm in the painting stage, which has been a humbling experience. The part I'm most pleased with so far is painting a decent water line. It took a few tries, but what finally worked for me was painting over the thin strip of yellow tape with more white paint before painting the darker colors. The part I've been most frustrated by are the crooked plank lines on the deck. I've had to tell the little perfectionist voice in my head quite a few times to settle down, explaining to him that this is my first time doing this and it doesn't need to look like it was made by someone with decades of experience. Here are some specifics:

Paints: enamel model paint, from Testor

Colors (all flat sheen):

  • water line - white
  • lower hull - dark red (red mixed with black)
  • upper hull - black
  • deck - tan
  • display cradle - gray (sanded for weathering)

Next steps:

  1. touch up paint on hull
  2. paint trim, toe rail, hatches, hatch covers, etc.
  3. finish the display stand.
