NMBROOK reacted to marktiedens in Royal William by marktiedens - FINISHED - Euromodel - scale 1:72
Hi mates & thanks for looking in. A little more progress made - I have finished installing the main & mizzen mast back stays & the mizzen stays. The crowsfeet at the mizzen top are also done. The shroud cleats provided are really nice, but looked a little large on the mizzen stay,so I had one a little smaller that I used. I will use the kit ones on the other areas where they are needed. Just about time to install that fragile bowsprit & hope I don`t snap it off while turning the ship back & forth.

Another small update - futtock shrouds done. The chainplates were made by wrapping the deadeyes with .8mm brass wire & soldering them shut. Then the ends were cut off & flattened by pinching them in a vice. Finally,a hole was drilled in the flattened ends. Hooks left over from a previous build were used to rig the shrouds.Smaller hooks were used on the mizzen shrouds.

Another small update - catharpins done. They were made by simply weaving a rope between the futtock staves & then they were tied together in small bundles. They will be tighter after the futtock shrouds are on & tensioned.

Hi Ferit
Fabulous to see you active again my friend. I haven't been around for a long time either mainly due to work demands but hope things will improve a little as the New year progresses
Kind regards

Hi everyone - the lower shroud ratlines are now re-done. I am now happy with them & will continue upwards as soon as I get my eyes un-crossed.

A little update - I was unhappy with the ratlines - line is a little too large & many of the knots did not look so good - especially near the top of the shrouds where they are very close together,so off they came. I am re-doing them with smaller line - about .018 inch. The clove hitches are now much tighter & neater looking as you can see in the picture. Gotta love re-do`s.

Hi everyone, another overdue update. All the topmast shrouds are now done. The camera is brutal, but they look ok from a foot away. I have also started doing some of the ratlines for a change of pace. Cow hitches were used on the end shrouds, with clove hitches on all the others. This may take some time...............

Update - all lower shrouds are now ratted. I will probably get the topgallant shrouds installed next to take a break from tying all those knots.

Another little update - all the lower shrouds are now done. Also added all the staves to the shrouds - each one is tied to each shroud rope. Glad to get that fiddly stuff done.Still deciding whether to add catharpins - they are not shown on the plans, but they were in use at that time period.

Another small update - the foremast lower shrouds are done. A bit fiddly to get them even, but they are pretty close.

A small update - the necessary blocks & wooldings have been added to the masts. More blocks & eyebolts need to be added to various parts of the decks yet before stepping the masts.

Another small update - I decided to re-do the rudder chains. I removed the ropes attached to the rudder & used chains with rope pendants instead. It`s a simplified version, but I think it will do.

A small update - all the yards are now built. Next I will be adding the necessary blocks & ropes to the masts & yards before permanently mounting them to the ship.

Well, after spending the better part of the day applying a wash to all those gold decorations,I think there is a real improvement to them. The first picture is before & the next three are after applying the wash. They actually look better in person than my cheapo camera shows.

Well,I decided I didn`t like them either,so I pulled them off & painted the panes black. A ship in port with no sails set would probably not have the lanterns lit anyway. The liquid glass I used never did dry right & looked a bit foggy.

A small update - decided I might as well mount the stern lanterns,so I made some side braces from some .8mm brass rod & glued them all in place. Next ,I cut & shaped all the stunsail yards. The stunsail irons were made from some brass & copper tubing & they were fitted on the stunsail yard with .8mm brass rod. I made caps for the end of the yard out of thin copper strip. They were attached at a 45 degree angle from the center of the yard I only have the fore topsail yard completed,so 3 more to go. The irons around the yard was made from black card stock.

Update - all the yards are now cut & shaped. Battens were added to the center portion of the appropriate yards, along with the cleats at the ends,& the sling cleats where needed. I found one error on the plans - the battens on the fore topmast yard were about 3mm off center,so I had to file off the previously installed battens on that yard & re-do them. All the other drawings were spot on.

Another update - mizzen mast is now completed. As before, all components were cut & shaped according to the plans. The mizzen mast is angled back a few degrees,so the cheeks were cut at an angle so the top would sit level.

Another update - the main mast was built identical to the fore mast, except larger. Hard to get a good picture of it since the height is about 770mm above deck level.

Hi Greg - I have taken a bit of a break due to catching a cold a couple of weeks ago & feeling lousy. I am much better now & should be up to speed soon. I have made a little progress on the bowsprit. The dowels were tapered & shaped according to the plans, then the top was cut from the supplied 1mm plywood & planked on both sides with a 1x3mm strip glued around the outside edge. The trestle trees & cross trees were then cut & shaped to fit & glued in place. The whole top assy. was then painted black. The chainplates were made by bending some .8mm brass wire around the deadeyes & soldered shut. The lower end was flattened in a vice & holes were drilled for nails. The design of the bowsprit is a little different than I have seen before - the top is offset to one side & the jibboom goes through the top rather than under it.

Update - moving right along,I added some cat heads to the catheads . Then I added the staghorn cleats to the quarterdeck bulwarks. I am pretty sure the hull is now complete except for the stern lanterns, which will be installed later .
