  1. Jim, I've read the articles from there on planking. I saw some ways to do this on the outside of the hull, although it is still not completely clear, once I do it on another model it will make more sense. Where I am still lost is how to do this on the inside of the hull, also the hull is only 7" long so it's pretty small to work with.
  2. I am brand new to model ship building and my first kit is the 18th century longboat by model shipways. I am working on the riser that goes on the inside of the hull below the cap rail. The instructions say to use a strip of paper to determine the curve of the riser in order to bend it on it's edge. I am not sure how I am suppose to do this. How do you determine the shape or edge bend of a plank using card paper? (I have index cards which I'm assuming would work). I've read some tutorials that talk about "spiling" a plank which I understand as determining the shape of the plank and then cutting the plank to shape instead of edge bending. But even that was not very informative about how to determine the shape or edge bend of a blank. I have a contour gage that I purchased to determine the shape of the outside of the hull and I have been successful at using the to determine the shape of the normal bend Help Please!
  3. I am brand new to model ship building. I have been reading a lot of things on planking but don't really understand battens. I am hoping to get a better understanding of what a batten is (is it a plank or something different), how to make them and how to use the properly.
  4. I am fortunate enough to be traveling through Boston in a few weeks. Doing an overnight layover so I can see the USS Constitution in person. I have seen the Cutty Sark in England in person. WOW, that is a BIG boat. LOL
  5. I am seeking advice on a good kit for a new ship builder. Here is what I'm looking for: Wood ship kit. Not solid hull. Prefer POB or POF. Age of Sails ship. Have all aspects of ship building so I can learn. (Planking, Masts, Rigging, Ratlines, Etc) Challenging yet not to the point of giving up. Large enough size to be easier to work with. Prefer war ships but open to anything. Excellent Instructions!!! Solid manufacturer, good reputation, good materials. Price: up to $500 Not concerned with historical accuracy on this model, concerned with learning techniques. I am from Nebraska so I have very little knowledge of ships and lingo. I have built one 1/196 USS Constitution kit by Revel (Plastic). It solidified my interest in ship models. I have a reasonable amount of tools and willing to acquire more as necessary, I like having the right tools for the job, but not looking to by expensive power tools at this point. My goal is to at some point gain enough knowledge and experience to work my way up to scratch building. Any thoughts, tips, advice would be greatly appreciated.
  6. Hello my name is Zack and I have started learning to build model ships. My primary interest lies in Age of Sails ships. I have completed a 1/196 USS Constitution by Revel. It was a fun build but I am really interested in building wood model ships. I have started my first wood kit, the 18th Century Longboat by Model Expo. I got the combo which included tools, paint etc. I guess I assumed it being a combo, it would be a good first model. After receiving the kit and doing some research, I realized most consider it to be an intermediate to advanced level due to it small size. Should be interesting if nothing else. I am from Lincoln, NE and as we are about as far from water as can be there is not much interest or knowledge locally regarding ship models. I hope that I can use this forum/website to get some good advice that I do not have available locally.
