Hi Pucko,
don't worry - make the best of it:
I would recommend you, to order the wood in your prefered quality from a reliable dealer. So you are free to choose much better kinds of wood - pear for exampel.
Maybe you will also need a circular saw for modellers purpose.

Peter is right.
If you use the deck-plans of the Vasa you will get the correct positions of the gun-ports without distortion.
The mounting-angle of the gunports follows the wales - as shown above.
The intervals of the gun-ports are irregular.
The patterns of the gunports are different at the starbord- and port-side of the ship.
A nightmare for a modeller. But you will get it, Puckotred
