HIPEXEC got a reaction from PaddyO in US Brig Syren by Hipexec - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64 - building as USS Argus
I've installed the last upper planks. I've made a slight mod to the plans which I will explain later. I also noticed that one side is 1/32 higher than the other? Go figure. It's an east fix with some sanding, but with all the careful measuring I did for the first plank, something must have slipped in the first gluing.

Here I'm installing the trickiest plank yet...the top of the gunports plank. It required I carefully cuy out the top of each gunport so it conforms with the opening. I first just dry clamped the plank into position, then made the cuts with a sharp knife and sanding stick, then glued it into position.

Another day...another course of planks. One plank course a day is all I can manage since I have to give the glue a chance to work.

I've begun planking. Here's the upper wale and two smaller planks above the upper wale. These were relatively easy since there's not much twisting and beveling needed. They were pre-curved in my jig. Only slight beveling. Above these requires nice neat cuts around the gun ports and sweep ports. Below, tapering and beveling, curves and twists.

I've clamped (not glued) the first two planks after sitting in my jig overnight. Both sides seem to fit very snugly. I guess all my fairing and sanding has paid off. Since the planks have a small downward arch as well as a curve, I will leave them clamped for a while so they keep the arch. I'll assist with some hot air from a hair dryer.

We just had a meeting of The Arizona Shipwrights at my garage shipyard. We welcome all model ship builders who live in Arizona to join our group. We get together once a month at one of our homes. It's educational and fun.

Time out from ship building while I install air conditioning in my Arizona garage. I insulated the garage doors, also. There's no working here without it in the summer.

Very slow progress while sanding and fairing in preparation for planking. I've made an array of sanding blocks trying to get into all the cracks and crevices. Char still is there?
I'm planning my own planking plan since I do not want to paint my ship and I do not want to copper it. I like looking at all the woodwork.

Well all that sanding finally caused parts of the fragile stern to come unglued. I'm holding together the fix with a rubber band.

The instructions call for me to cut out and tape the stern template on for part locations. Easier said than done. Longitudinally was no problem but vertically was. I finally laid a narrow straight edge on the deck so it lined up with the deck level blocks I previously installed. Next the whole thing is like a fragile tuning fork, so I am experimenting with rubber band clamps to hold parts after glued. I have glued nothing yet.. This will take very careful measuring since the verticals will spread if too big.

I finished the stern's vertical frames faster than I expected. If it weren't for the use of nails, I couldn't have progressed this fast.

Slow but sure the stern is getting done. At this stage it's very fragile, but the instructions say that will improve with the addition of sills and lintels.

Moving right along, I've added the second stern piece and second spacer. That's it for today since the PVA glue has to do its job.

Well I can see that building the stern on this ship is going to be very, very tricky. First of all, way back weeks ago, I CA glued the stern frame angles since they appeared very fragile. That seemed to work since the stern frames do not seem as fragile anymore.
Gluing the first "A" piece was a struggle. I tried several clamps I have, but none of them worked. I Finally drilled a nail hole in the frame and glued and nailed the frame to the spacer block. Now the first "A" frame seems perpendicular to the bulkhead and straight vertically. Nobody said ship building was easy.

Hallelujah! All my starboard side gunports match the supplied template!

Finished sanding and fairing the port side. That rocket ship looking thing is a kids balloon blow up pump. Since I sand with a mask, I use that to blow off the saw dust.

I cut the aft bulkhead and got no warping this time. I sanded the cuts ad glued and clamped gunport sides. After the glue sets I shall begin sanding and fairing the gunport sides.

The instructions said to wait until the last frame before sawing bulkhead #24 because the structure will now be very strong. They were right. I had no trouble sawing through the bulkhead frame. If you remember....these same frames were very fragile when first installed.
I then lightly sand the frame smooth, so I can glue the the gunport sides. These side do not appear to be square with the frame.

I glued in the first gunport sides. Some sides are not as thick as most. The great news is there will only be a small amount of sanding to fair these pieces once installed since they are almost net size.

Still sanding lintels. My shop looks like it snowed and I'm not finished.

Then I glued (CA) a "C" shaped piece of wire where the ring would go.

I salvaged the starboard gallery windows, but I have no idea how I'll salvage the aft windows. I don't even want to show you them. They are a product of one of the few pre-cut pieces Constructo provides. The per-cut holes were too big, so I had to shrink the holes before installing the windows. Now I don't like the way they look, so I'll probably tear them all out and start over. Oh well! They say model ship building is a series of error corrections. The first error we make is starting!

That is the neatest and most precise work I've ever seen on this website! Wow.

I'm basically finished with what I can do. Now, I have to go through the instructions, pictures and drawings to catch small stuff I might have missed. Also, I'm still "graying" the pure white running rigging. I might add a mast top pendant. I'll also have to find my original files on the Argus to make sure I got it right.
I can't believe I started this model on January 19, 2017! That's three years three months of working on it. Of course Stage four cancer and 20% deep tissue burns got in the way.

Main hatchway finished except for the boat cradles and brass. If it weren't for Sjor's tip, I'd still be fumbling around trying to build them.
