Step 233 of 240 in the manual!! - so closing in. The masts aren't glued in place yet - they need trued up etc. I will do that - let it dry - then it's the standing rigging with dead eyes rat lines etc. So could be a wait for the next post

Coincidentally I left that part unpainted - but I regret that decision as its a little translucent as it turns out - I've been meaning to go back and paint it

Don't worry - it would take something pretty drastic to stop at this stage - I mean get the "Finished" badge from the moderators - I owe it to Vanguard Models really

Plowing on - sails dyed - I would love to have experimented a little more (but the HMS Alert awaits) - this was 75% Cocoa Brown and 25% Scarlet for 10 mins. Would have been interesting to add a couple of drops of blue, but without going purple!!. I'm using a mast cut off piece for alignment. If I had been making my own sails I definitely would have fallen into the trap of thinking the plan was 1:1 scale. The scissors are a builder"s recommendation from a fly tying supply site.

Thanks glennard for the suggestion I will definitely try that. I thought the mast etc. production pretty relaxing - its easy to redo stuff if you're not satisfied, just cut the blocks off and start again - so a great and fast learning process. Listening to Brian Eno on Spotify also helps!! I did consider (as a fast build) cutting and joining two sizes of dowels for the main mast build especially as the rigging stay would cover the join, but masking off the transition line with tape and using a flat file worked fine and gave a uniform colour.

Eventually got round to attaching the hinges. See some comments below. Completed the masts gaffs and booms etc. Tapering the dowels turned out to be perfectly achievable just by hand with sandpaper and files. Here are some comments on the build so far in no particular order. 1. To attach the steam valve to the steam box rather than do a butt join I drilled a hole, elongated the hole with a knife blade - the brass is soft. 2. The plans are not to 1:1 scale (sorry for the obvious) so don't rush ahead and cut to dowels to the plans - I nearly fell into this. 3. I attached the rudder hinges with shortened bass pins - this was a mistake and looked horrible - I can't correct it now 4. I wouldn't use the spray Varathane satin varnish again it just doesn't have the silky finish I wanted - the quest continues (recommendations? for Alert?). 5. The bowsprit was installed not fully resting on the woodwork - I probably will not go back and fix this. 6. Probably should have stained the main mast So I'm trying a 75:25 mix of oak brown and scarlet mix (RIT) for the staining of the sails - the end is in sight

re dead eyes: - yes they are free to rotate in V form, so they will rig properly. Be a while before I get there as pairing the masts etc. down will be done by hand as I don't have a lathe.

I bought some sails - thought I'd have a go at that especially since all the hard work has been done. Also my Vanguard HMS Alert arrived - it looks like a big step up.

Hull nearing completion - just needing the rudder hinges which I forgot about!! and a few other fittings. The "Chaos Black" recommended in a prior build from a member (forgot where) is really excellent and a great find.

Finished up painting the hull. The red oxide primer from Plastikote was excellent. However the white waterline was not as neat as I hoped, certainly more attention here was needed. Little to no planking visible below the waterline - which I know is not everyone's taste. I am painting the rudder separately.

Here's an update. I filled the various cracks using slightly diluted acrylic filler (Ronseal) and sanding down using nothing courser than grade 320. Then applied a coat of satin varnish. While it looked mostly pretty smooth some of the pear wood planking came out mismatched colors - unfortunately above the waterline. I had read in other logs that modelers presorted the pear strips before 2nd planking and I definitely wish now I had done the same. I thought it was a little overdoing it - but it's not. Lesson learned. I used the Amati waterline marker, masked off, and then applied 1 coat of the Plastikote sandable white primer. Filled any remaining cracks with a skim of Tamiya putty. The below photos are the current stage after sanding with 400 grit.

my hatches where unpainted - so it didn't leave a mark, I figured if it did (leave a mark) I could just glue the hatch back in the same place and cover it up ---- but if they had been painted I wouldn't have chanced it - it could create a big mess presumably with the paint dissolving and spreading over the deck.

Semi-corrected the fish hatches to align on starboard edge - first time using the CA de-bonder - it does work!! Added some fittings. I couldn't really find in the manuals/diagrams where the forward cleats where to be attached - so I put them half way up the timber heads (two each side). I have assembled most of the other deck fittings but won't glue them in place until I finish the hull -- the filling & painting, in case I knock them off. Where the h**l is my filler - there is too much Scotch/Irish blood in me to order another tube locally.

I am enjoying the Vanguard "Erycina" a ketch rigged fishing vessel, but, all the fishing vessels from VM are worthy. The fishing history is interesting and very relevant to your part of the world - Barking and Billingsgate, which could give you the drive to finish it and put it into a display.

btw - I just noticed an error in my assembly the fore and main hatches I have aligned both centrally. However the fore hatch should be jogged a little (about a 1/4 of a plank) to starboard so that the starboard edges of both hatches align. Hope that's clear -- it is on Erycina Plan Sheet 4 Detail 1.

btw - you can see that the varnish has brought out the grain on the deck veneer - that wasn't the effect I was looking for !! - but I think I'm stuck with it now

thanks for all the encouragement - here are some photos taken in natural light - no filler or varnish to hull as yet - ordered Alert for my next build. Not sure about absence of a rabbet for the 2nd planking in the Alert build but I fancy the the deck planking and single mast best for me at this stage.

OK - plugging along. I had a last minute change of heart and picked Vallejo medium green but I will keep the stern board that has the "Erycina" transfer Saddle Brown (for now). Just a couple of points; I had to shorten the top rails by about 1/16" to prevent too much of an over hang; the timber heads and top rails need varnishing; the green color is a little darker in actuality; the varnish is spray Varathane Satin - which darkens the pear wood somewhat, but I kinda like that; I'm waiting on my acrylic filler (Ronseal natural) that seems to be on a slow boat from china; and finally I forgot to mention that for the second side planking I used 0.5mm packing strips between the 1st planking and the stern keel and got a much better and even finish.
