  1. Missed another one. Between the $2,000 table saws and speed at which anything reasonable gets grabbed, guess it’s time to start loooking at alternatives.
  2. I also have a larger version - the 16/32 - and it has done a great job for me. I’ve found when I get down to about 1/8” it’s easier to run pieces through on top of a reference board as opposed to laying directly on the conveyor belt. As you get thinner the drum belt tends to sand against the conveyor belt at the ends because it’s hard to get the paper fully into / against the drum. That only happens at the ends in my experience. If you do get one, also get the small tool they have for opening the end spring. It makes inserting paper a little easier.
  3. Being new to shipbuilding - still considering my first - but having done a number of miniature houses, I was planning to purchase the Byrnes saw and thickness sander this year before the untimely passing of Jim Byrnes. While I continue to hope they will restart and also look for used, I’m wondering if there are alternatives that people would recommend based on their usage. Thanks for any thoughts, John
  4. Looking great and excited to watch this come together - there’s something about a paddle wheeler.
  5. So glad to have found this site and all the resources. I want to try my hand and probably would have made the same mistakes talked about here given I’ve been doing woodworking for years. Going to start small and build skills (like I did with furniture making). Thanks to all for your contributions.
  6. Thanks to all and I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be sure to check the build logs and find something that has a bit of challenge but not too much (same problem I warn people about in the miniature house and furniture world). Best, John
  7. Hi all - I’m brand new to ship modeling, though I’ve been a hobby woodworker for about 15 years building furniture, clocks, and doing a lot of turning on the lathe. Have also built doll houses and small scale furniture for inside. I’ve been thinking about trying my hand at model ships for a while, having spent many years growing up in Cape Cod fishing and boating. Looking forward to learning a lot and picking out a first project (I did see there are helpful resources here as well). Thanks, John
