That odd crane arrangement  at/near the stern most mast (mizzen? I can't tell on these vessels ) is what I went looking for in Google, began with British ww2 cruisers and went on from there
ps any idea what's with the red circle ?

Ok then chaps,I see what you mean, but doing it that way spoils the fun,I wouldn't have seen all the lovely BBQ's outside airstream caravans or every ship owned by Arklow shipping(sorry Eamonn)     Enough waffle from me,here is the next

Totally agree Jan.. I put Empire State in myself to check last night and it 'passed', whereas I put it in again (after your comment) and up she pops!   'Beats me' what happened there   I must have screwed up somewhere along the line :)
Have to say that this Name the Ship is good fun, though it doesn't half soak up the time!!
    Bye for now.

Google gives you the choice between iuploading the pic itself into search, or just the url of the picture you want to use.
copy-past the url of the pic as uploaded here was enough for this one.

The strange thing is that sometimes google still recognizes a heavily edited picture, and sometimes a very small change is enough to foll the program.
I still don't know what the determining factor is....

Hi again, spent another few hours on interior work, want to get that done.. I must admit i am struggling a bit with how to finish it off. How to depict thoroughfare through to main hold etc.. At the moment i am trying just having a rectangular opening with framing perhaps and black background..(pic 3) Its a bit narrow in companion too. Nothings fixed in yet.

Very tempted to cut further into hull (main hold) just for peeking in.. but don't want to compromise too much strength or anything..

I tried making some scrolled maps, not sure this appropriate and they need to be smaller i think...(it is amazing how taking photos shows up imperfections and scale issues). Will be glad when my interior is done and move along..

Please feel free to share any ideas of how to finish the interior walls. Obviously this is not easy as the plans i have are quite two dimensional.. And basically i just have to do what i can with where im at now and have to accept i can never make it totally authentic inside.. ..  Regards Ollie

    Ollie,

The easiest way to build small wooden open boats (in my opinion) is to make a 'plug' to the correct shape and then to bend the frames over the plug and plank.

The pictures below might help with the basic idea.  These are the boats for my model of the 'Nareau' under construction - they're roughly 40mm long.

    Gentlemen,
Can I interrupt your very entertaining morning talks?
just to confirm that she is indeed HrMs Overijssel (D815), one of the 8 Friesland class ships. (build in 1955, in active service till 1982)

Thank you very much Eamonn Greenwich was a big disappointment for me after seeing all the articles in the past about it.I was in Cornwall a few years back but only passed through Penzance briefly.Portsmouth was great, hoping to go again. One place worth a look if you are into all things history, not just ships,is the Orkney islands.Lots of things to see,of course the old naval base at Lynness but the most moving thing of all was the green buoy marking the Royal Oak,the oil is still visible seeping out of the wreck,a bit like USS Arizona.Lots of wartime lookout and gun emplacements remain, also the 'churchill barriers'sunken coasters to prevent U boats entering Scapa Flow, unfortunately it didn't stop Gunther Prien in U47.At low tide some of these wrecks are visible above water.

Nigel I just popped over to your SotS build.. only had a quick look at some of the 20 pages! that is EXCEPTIONAL work you are doing there..
I too was in Greenwich within the last couple of years and agree re the unfavourable changes (was there about 20 years ago for 2 visits and found it to be an entirely different beast than it is now) have never ventured to Portsmouth though it is pencilled in for a future visit!

    Eamonn
btw have you ever gotten to the maritime museum in Penzance ? it was done out like an old wooden warship.. clever stuff (hope it hasn't changed since my visit over 10 years ago)

Or RNLI Lifeboats for that matter Nigel (the thought crossed my mind, but only for a second or two) might just get my neighbours 2 year old to draw a boat from a photo.. easy peasy eh

    Until tomorrow then.

Thank you very much indeed Michael. As you know yourself,it is the little details that all add up to the complete picture. Some can be monotonous and very boring(faced with drilling a thousand holes using a drill bit and bamboo skewer, but no pun intended),but I don't think any project so far has got me quite so fired up as this one.Sometimes I look at the model and think'is there any point posting some pictures'as despite maybe 50 hours work it doesn't look any different. Then I think 'yes I will' as this is a journey and whilst some days big differences will occur, then weeks of work can go by with little difference immediately apparent.
I visited the NMM a couple of years ago and was a little disappointed having seen so many articles in the past. From what I can gather it has changed alot in recent years and my main motivation for going was to view the models, there was maybe 8 on display in a pokey little sideroom.
Portsmouth historic dockyard was a different matter altogether,Victory,Warrior and particularly Mary Rose left a massive impression.Mary Rose so much so,that my wife has insisted I make a model of her. This will probably be the model that gets a place in the living room.I hope to revisit her now that she is no longer being sprayed with polyethylene glycol and has a new enclosure.

I have a sneaky suspicion the photo may be a little old comparing the weapons and radar systems to the pics we are seeing.Don't be surprised if she has been refitted. Some leander class were supplied to the Dutch navy,I am going to check that out.

I could be wrong Eamonn but I think she is either Van Speijk or Kortenaer class.Pretty much everything else is of a 'stealth' design, but it is a bit like trying to name which Leander frigate
