    Hi everyone

I hope you're all enjoying your weekends!

Woohoo!!!  I decided to take a break from doing the cabin layouts to work on the fitting out of the Main Saloon.  Although it's still early days, Shadow now has the main settees (albeit, minus their cushions, which will be added later), four small rectangular coffee tables on the blue floor mat, and the main dining room table, complete with 14 dining chairs.

Lots of fun to go, folks!

I hope you enjoy the following photos.

    Cheers

    Hi folks!

Thanks for all of your Likes and comments!

Well, she's getting there, albeit slowly.  It may not actually look like there's been a lot done since my last update, but a lot of the work has been devoted to building more cabins and a myriad of other fine measurements and trimming of bits and pieces here and there.

Anyhow, I thought you may like to see where she's at via the following photos.

    Have a good week!

    Hi folks

A quick update for you all - Shadow's interior accommodation continues to grow, albeit slowly.  So far, I've been concentrating on building the layout of all the cabins located within the Bilge, Lower and Main decks.  Getting these in the correct locations is vital, otherwise, the various staircases connecting the decks would be askew.  Trust me, that would not be a good look!

Oh well, there's still heaps of fun to go.

    Have a great week, everyone!

    Cheers

    Hi everyone.

Just a quick update - I'm still working on Shadow's Lower Deck's accommodation.  Still at an early stage, though.

Have a great Friday and impending weekend!

    Cheers

    Hi everyone

Once again, many thanks for all of your comments and Likes!

I've added some more detail to the two decks of Shadow's engine room.  I'm hoping that with the addition of some cupboards, pipes, etc, that it'd look reasonably passable, even though the scale is so tiny.  Bucket loads more to go, though.

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Have a great weekend!

    Hi everyone

Thanks for all of your Likes and comments.  I really enjoy them, particularly as they put a warm smile on my face  .

Anyhow, as the fit-out of Shadow's interior progresses, I've started on her Engine Room, which consists of two decks.  Shadow's small size, as well as the fact that the plans are sadly lacking in detail, has meant that I've had to be realistic about what level of detail I could fit into such a tiny area.  So, please don't be too critical....Oh well, as long as it looks mildly convincing, I'd be happy.

Whilst there's heaps more work to go, here are the photos so far.

    All the best, everyone!

Thanks for all the Likes and comments!  Greatly appreciated.

This is just another quick update.  I've been progressing with the internal fit out, albeit at a very early stage, taking care to ensure that the major cabin bulkheads are fitted and installed.  As usual, a whole bucket load more work to go; but it's a start.

    Enjoy!

HI everyone - many thanks for all of your comments and Likes.  A special thanks to Leo-zd for the photos of his 1:1 ships!

A quick update.  I've spent the last couple of weeks cutting out and individually planking all of the internal decks.  In doing so, care was taken to ensure that each deck could be removed and inserted easily and smoothly.

Here are the results so far.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

    All the best everyone.

Just a quick update.  I've added the radars and some more details to Shadow's mast.  In addition, I've also added the tall mast which is situated on Shadow's foscle.  Lastly, I've been doing some more painting and puttying on her superstructure and rear diving platform.

Lots more work to go, though.

I hope you enjoy the photos, folks.

    Hi everyone

Well, Shadow's journey has been going slowly lately due to our house being painted. However, I've managed to work on her a little; so much so, that I've fashioned her three radar domes and antenna mast which are located on the top of the Sun Deck. At the rear of the main deck, I've added the twin staircases which lead from the deck above to the rear diving platform at the transom.

Still bucket loads of work, painting, puttying, etc, etc, etc (you know the drill )...

BTW, everything's still loosely placed in their respective locations; that's why they look a tad wonky!

    All the best!

    Cheers

I haven't had much time to devote to Shadow over the past few weeks, so... progress has been pretty slow.

A very quick update:  So far, I've only managed to set out the bulkheads on the Sun Deck's accommodation and the tender garage below decks.  I know it all looks pretty rough at this early stage, but at least it's a start.

All the best for 2017, everyone!

    HI folks!

Thanks for all of your comments and Likes; which I enjoy very much.

Well, Shadow's journey continues. I've painted the underwater section of her hull a silver colour.  Why?  Because the real ship was built out of aluminium and I figured, that an aluminium looking under-hull would be fitting.  Besides, I have seen a few pictures of other mega yachts with silver coloured under-hulls and they looked stunning (well, to my eye, anyway).  Therefore, I'm kinda sticking with the current metallic colour scheme of gold above-water and silver underwater.  I'll add a black water-line later on.

I've also laid the individually planked wooden decks tonight.  They still require sanding and trimming, but hey, as with the whole model, there's still a bucket load more work to go!

I hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers

Well.....she FLOATS!!!!!  Who would've thunk it, hey?  After doing some more wet and dry sanding and painting of the hull and superstructure last night, I thought I'd see if Shadow actually floats.  So, off I went to one of our garden ponds and, well, I'll let the pictures say the rest...

    Enjoy

    Hi folks

I'm back! Life's been really hectic over the past few weeks, which has meant that I've had little time for MSW, catching up with people's builds, or working on Shadow. Hopefully, things will ease off so that I can get back to some normality.

Anyhow, over the past few nights, I've kinda reached a milestone with Shadow - that being the completion of the construction of the major components of her superstructure. With that milestone behind me, I can now settle down to detailing her interior accommodation and the myriad of above-deck details. Fun times ahead!

I hope you all enjoy the photos as much as I'm going to enjoy catching up with everyone's build logs!

    Cheers

Just a quick update on Shadow.

I've been concentrating on getting the external superstructure built. So far, most of the general shape is there; well enough to see the beauty starting to come through.

Still heaps to go, but time's been limited lately.

Hopefully, I'll be able to get more time later.

    Have a great weekend!

    Hi everyone!

Thanks for all of your comments and Likes. Greatly appreciated!

This week, I've been too flat out to work on Shadow, until tonight. The first thing that I managed to do was to build the initial framework of the cabin on the Upper Deck. A lot of guess work has gone into it because the photos and plans that I'm relying upon don't show that much detail. But, nonetheless, at least I've managed to nut it out...I think!

Lots of work to go, though.

Anyhow, I'm just glad that she's beginning to take shape.

    Have a great weekend, folks!

Well, Shadow's journey continues.  Before I can start on any of her internal details, I've decided that it is essential to build the superstructure and it's supporting decks, namely the Main, Upper and Sun Decks.  Once they're done, then I can safely start on the internal accommodation.

As you can see from the photos, the decks are really at a very rough and early stage, so they don't look terribly spectacular  Here's hoping that with a healthy dose of magic by Nenad's worker ants  , the 'diamond in the rough' will be transformed into a little jewel (well....let's hope so).

    Cheers and all the best!

    Hi everyone

A quick update. As I mentioned earlier, it's essential for me that Shadow's decks are all lined up accurately; failure to do so, will mean that the internal build will suffer. Therefore, I've continued to work on the correct locations of the internal bulkeads, staircases, deck heights etc, starting from the Bilge Deck and working upwards.

I've also started to build the Upper Deck's superstructure (that's the green cardboard thingy that's sitting atop Shadow's hull in one of the photos.

Still loads more to go, folks!

Enjoy the remainder of your weekends!

    Cheers

Well, I've started on the basic layout of Shadow's Engine Room and other associated areas of her Bilge Deck.  In addition, I also bit the bullet and cut out the two large garage doors (situated at the port and starboard side of the ship's hull).  These garage doors are where Shadow's two large ship's tenders are berthed when underway.

I know it all looks very rough at this stage, but, it's still very early in Shadow's build. Lots more to go.  Oh well, gotta start somewhere, don't we?

    Have a great one!

    HI everyone.

Many thanks for all of your comments and compliments.  It means heaps to me!

You know, one of the many mistakes I made with Majellan (see my Build Log below) is that I never had a clear idea of how her various decks fitted together, which was a big no-no, because it meant that making sure that access ways and staircases, etc all were correctly aligned vertically and horizontally, was problematic.

In contrast, I'm going to avoid that mistake with Shadow by being more careful right from the start. For instance, I've cut out all the deck plans in cardboard as templates to ensure that everything is aligned properly.  Smart thinking I say (well...that's the theory anyway).

As you can see from the photos below, each deck is labelled to indicate where the various decks are.  These templates will be essential when marking and aligning the bulkheads and other major structural elements, thereby making sure that everything fits together properly.

    All the best!

    Hi everyone!

Ok.  I'm worried!  Why?  Because so far, I haven't had ANY MAJOR stuff-ups with Shadow's construction.  I'm not used to this!!!!  I'm definitely not in my comfort-zone and I feel uneasy.  My normal pattern of building is to lurch convincingly from one major stuff up, to the next...never quite recovering from the last error, before the next one crops up.  But, noooo, Shadow has to be the exception.

So far, everything's gone pretty well according to plan.  The hull's straight and narrow.  She's symmetrical longitudinally and laterally.  She's relatively strong and rigid.

Oh, dear God, please let me stuff something up so that I can get back to my normal feelings of discomfort!!!!

Ok, my 'tongue in cheek' rant is over .  I guess what I'm saying is that I'm pretty happy with Shadow's progress, so far.
Also, I've been scouring the Net for similar mega-yachts and have been transfixed by a couple of boats that have gold coloured hulls.  Weird, I know, but I reckon they look pretty good.  So, what the heck, I've applied a gold/coppery colour to the hull as an experiment.  Mmmm, not too shabby, I reckon.

I hope you share my enthusiasm for the colour...

    Cheers

Hi Greg and Mick, and everyone else who commented and hit the Like button!  Thanks!

Tonight, Shadow's hull has emerged from her balsa mould.   In doing so, I was extra careful to try and remove the balsa core in sections; that way, I could use the sections to create templates for the internal bulkheads later on.

If I'm not making sense, perhaps the pictures will explain it better than my words can.

    Have a great week, folks.

    Hi folks

Thanks to everyone for their Likes and comments! Greatly appreciated.

As you can see for the following photos, I've now been able to make some progress on Shadow's hull. This consisted of adding the longitudinal stringers and vertical frames onto the balsa plug, thus creating the framework of the hull. Once planked, I'll release the hull from the balsa plug, with the result being a nice strong hull...well, hopefully anyway.

    Wish me luck!

All the best and enjoy your weekends.

    Hi everyone

Well, my current project, Majellan, is nearing completion, but, I've been itching to get started on her BIG sister, 'Shadow'.

Shadow is based upon an actual mega-yacht called "Mary Jean II", which can be found at http://www.isayachts.com/ISA_60m_CLASSIC#60m.

My model will, in my customary fashion, be fully detailed inside with all of her five decks reproduced (well...as much as realistically possible, of course).  Each deck will be fully removable in order to enable the interior to be viewed; in much the same way as Majellan's are.

Also, as you can see from one of the photos, Shadow looks like a giant compared to Majellan, even though Shadow's hull is only one inch longer, i.e. 8 inches, as opposed to 7 inches for Majellan's hull.

In terms of Shadow's hull's construction, I will use the balsa mould of the hull as the base to bend the frames upon.  Once all the frames are bent, I'll the plank over the framework to create the hull...well...that's the plan, anyway.

I hope you can join me on Shadow's journey!!!!

Some of today's effort: assembling some of the Syren Ship Model Company's internally iron stropped blocks.

In the first picture you'll find, on the left, how the mini-kits arrive.

In the center/top are blocks glued together using medium CA and toothpicks (per the online instructions).

At the right are the sheave pin 'wire' and the incredibly fine strip stock used for the strops in the remaining bags.

In the center you'll see blocks snipped off the frames and also blocks which have had the sprue and laser burn sanded off.  I found using a no. 11 blade wasn't the best way to separate the blocks from the frame - it is easy for the sprue to snap off at part and remove a small chunk of the block. The shears shown worked quite well at separating the block without the damage to the block.

The second picture is a close up of the blocks.

I tried inserting the fine strip stock into the laser cut slots - they worked perfectly on the couple I tried.

I will have to wait a short while before I can tumble them to smooth the edges.
