Been doing a little of this and a little of that. Like adding the vertical ladder to the deckhouse, the ventilators, anchor chain, bitts, etc. Pretty soon I think I'll be starting the rigging.

The rear deckhouse is permanently installed, and the bilge pump is fabricated.

Boy, does it feel good to get back to modeling.

Made the several sampson posts for the forecastle from 1/8" square stock. Pins are for secure mounting.

So I have been out of the hospital for a week now. Get tired very easily, every day is a little improvement. Got to looking at the RJ last Friday, and wondered why there are no scupper ports in the bulwarks. Careful examination of the plans shows 8 tiny channels from the deck out the hull. I thought "why bother?"but I couldn't ignore them. Here's a shot of one of them (just left of the locker) and its exit. Time to bring out the black touch-up paint.

Here's both deck-houses. Just a little more work, and they can be glued on.

    The Red Jacket is 1:96

The doors and windows are on the photo etched sheet of brass that comes with the kit. You can buy the sheet, part number BJ71 rev.2 for $20 plus S&H.

Here is the finished wheelhouse. The plans just have a slant roofed box, but I added styrene angle at the corners and made the roof even with them. Looks better, I think.

  15. Thanks!

And, of course, what modeler cannot resist putting the sub-assemblies together to see what it will look like?

At the bow, the figurehead of "Red Jacket" (Sagoyewatha, Seneca Indian chief) was painted and mounted.
His nickname is because a British soldier gave him a coat during the revolutionary war.

Today I put on the photo etched scrollwork at the stern. It took an hour of aligning and re-positioning and gluing to get it done. I am happy with the result!

It's time to do the figurehead and stern carving. They are of Sagoyewatha, the Seneca chief of the Wolf clan. His nickname Red Jacket is because of the red coat a British army officer gave him during the American Revolution.

One of the problems in painting is to mix the flesh color of an American Indian. A google search yielded plenty of advice from miniature figure painters, but they involved colors in acrylic and/or oil that I never head of. What I finally settled on is a mix of Burnt Sienna and cream. I think it came out OK.

And here's two of the 3 pieces glued down into their many little holes. There will be puttying to do to get a smooth railing at the transition point.

Over the w/e I started the poop deck railings. The kit provides several lengths of cast stanchions/railings. These have to be bent to fit the curvature of the stern I decided to bend them upside down, to get a more accurate curve. Then they will get painted and installed.

Pinrails - as promised. Now it occurs to me that I didn't have to be so precise about fitting the stanchions - the tops can't be seen!
