The # one bulkhead (by the stem) had a measurement of 28 mm on the portside and 26 mm on the starboard side. I found the problem when using a batten to determine how much to bevel. I don't know how it happened, but it is what it is. I used 1X4 mm stock left over from my first build to add material. It was flexible enough to match the contour of the bulkhead. I used two layers of material. So far, so good.
  2. This is my second build. I chose the Badger with the help of my friend Clare Hess and I'm glad I did. I've read all I could find about this ship and ones that are similar. I'm looking forward to the work ahead. I had fun laying the keel and associated bulkheads. I added some mast supports to the side of the keel and the mast slots. That idea came from Ben Lankford's book. The plans called for planking the false deck later, but I thought I could do a better job of it now.post-936-0-64079800-1374630712.jpgpost-936-0-56143100-1374630825.jpgpost-936-0-87789900-1374630898.jpgpost-936-0-32155300-1374630951.jpgpost-936-0-02576300-1374631023.jpgpost-936-0-11141300-1374631085.jpg

  3. Well, I finished my work on the Albatros by OcCre. I'm glad I chose that as my first build. I learned a great deal and the kit was forgiving enough to let me correct my mistakes. There were several times when I felt like I built it more than once. I added a few things that were not included with the kit and I added sail just for the experience of doing so. I spray starched the sails and mounted them in such a way as to try and simulate her being at sea.

I want to thank all of you who helped me with this project even if I just studied your work. It was a lot of fun.

Now on to my next project......the Badger by Caldercraft.post-936-0-16564800-1372531790_thumb.jpgpost-936-0-27987700-1372531855_thumb.jpgpost-936-0-55662300-1372531887_thumb.jpg

  4. Thanks for that information. I can visualize paper sails. I have learned so much working on this model. It's almost like each step of the process from planking to rigging is a separate adventure and then I step back and see the big picture which is the model itself. It's a wonderful process. I appreciate your help.

  5. Hi Mark,

Thanks for your reply and your help. There is so much information on the link you sent me that I may spend some time checking it out so I am thanking you in advance of reading it all. I have been studying so much in advance of actually building a model and during the build that the fun just keeps on coming! I really like your quote. "Wish I'd said that".

    Bill

  6. Thank you for your reply, Wefalck. I am working on my first build and am adding sails just for the experience of doing so and my wife likes the way it looks on the model. I furled a square sail, but found the jib to be too bulky. Your pictured example is very nice. I'm enclosing two pictures of my work, but please keep in mind that this an amateurish first attempt.post-936-0-99386200-1370823764_thumb.jpgpost-936-0-40993900-1370823930_thumb.jpg

It sure does work! I'm now moving on. I've made a lot of mistakes  on this, my first, build, but have managed to keep on going and am hopefully learning from those errors. As with most things the builder knows where the mistakes are and the casual observer doesn't. My friends think she looks great. Perhaps you folks will enjoy a couple of glasses of fine California wine before you look too close. Cheers, Bill.

  8. I am currently building the Albatros by OcCre. It is a beginner level kit which is great for me as it is my first kit. I found the instructions okay ( with help from the old MSW build logs).  The picture instructions were very helpfull and the instructions were translated well. All of the parts were in the kit, but there were no extras. If you drop a deadeye, you better find it. :-)
