HMS Fly 1776 by Victory Models

My first real build of a model ship, although I had built HM Cutter Hunter by Mamoli in around 1996, on HMS Fly I paid a lot more attention to the detail. I would like to thank all the other builders of Swan Class ships with logs on this site from whom I have learnt such an enormous amount but still have such a long way to go.

Beautiful model. To what extent have you gone beyond the original kit to add further detail?

Hi Delf, Thanks for the compliment and interest in the build. 

Quite a lot of the extra detail is not visible. Below decks, I made cabin bulkheads and the ship's stove. but was  not entirely happy with the result so it's probably as well they are hidden. Spirketting and quick work were details not mentioned in the kit and I also added the manger.

I replaced the kit guns with barrels from HiS Model and also the carriage trucks. Above deck I modified the capstan, binnacle and rudder housing and added mast partners. I bought elm tree pumps, stern lantern and anchors from Jokita. I tried to modify the skylight but my skills were not up to it. I made new pivot gun supports but kept the pivot guns from the kit because again, I didn't think that I was up to copying some of the upgrades that I'd seen on build logs.

For the masting and yards I followed as near as possible the dimensions and shaping based on Steel and Lees. Lees was also a great help in the rigging with stays and shrouds served where necessary.

The flags were made from tissue and painted by my daughter whose hand is much steadier than mine.
