USS Burton Island

This is a rehashed Revell "box scale" kit of the navy icebreaker Burton Island, previously marketed as a Coast Garde icebreaker "Eastwind"   The sea you can see is resin over a painted base and the ice is plaster, not much more i can say about the kit, the usual Revell molded in Garde rails etc.

This is a wonderful model and a realistic diorama as well! Great job!

I was stationed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Storis out of Kodiak, Alaska, for 1 1/2 years in 1966-67. She was an auxiliary icebreaker so we only broke moderately thick ice at times and did not venture into the heavy pack ice like the Burton Island was capable of. After being reassigned to Long Beach, California, in the fall of 1967, the Burton Island was getting ready to leave for Antartica and I almost got sent to go with her which was fine with me since the Beach Boys were singing about California Girls and I was looking forward to meeting some!
