Hello! I am a new member that has never made any type of model before. I’ve ordered my very first wooden model (The Constructo Golden Hind) and I’m wondering what type of glue would be the best to use. I bought some Gorilla Wood Glue, though I’m starting to doubt if I should use it since I haven’t seen many other people on here use it. Any other tips for a newbie would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

New to this, I thought I would buy the HMS VICTORY from Wish it's only £30, looks like it is a Chinese kit so quality unknown, but I thought a good starting place as I can make mistakes and learn while not ruining an expensive kit. I am Jeff any advice would be great

I debated writing this but then thought it couldn't hurt: sandpaper. Use it! I don't want to name and shame anyone, but there is a huge proportion of finished models displayed on MSW on which the detailed photos of deck fittings or mast details show a lack of adequate sanding and surface prep. It looks like a lot of builders punch out the laser cut parts and incorporate them directly into the model without sanding to an adequate degree. I KNOW that close up photography of small parts reveals flaws not visible to the naked eye but some of the model photos I see show that a lot of small wooden parts are going onto models without enough sanding taking place, the surfaces are often covered in irregular globs bumps and spikes. since most kit models are basswood, it helps to recognize that the biggest drawback of basswood is it's fuzzyness. In other respects it's a great material but at the near-microscopic level fibers at the edges are very stringy, they don't break off neatly at the surface of the wood but cling on randomly as fuzz. Paint or varnish going on over this fuzz only serves to make the fuzz bolder and stick out in hardened spikes and that's what I'm looking at in these detail photos I'm seeing. I'm going to make another plug for the use of a Sanding Sealer. Available in any hardwear store, one can should last your entire modeling career. I use a water based Minwax Sanding Sealer. It paints on like thin acrylic paint, completely transparent. When dry it has the effect of darkening the wood just a bit. Is that so bad? The surface you get has hardened and feels shellacked. When you go over it with fine sandpaper those annoying stringy grainy fibers break right off at the surface in a way that reminds you of those old animated cross sectional shaving razor commercials in which each hair is lifted and cut perfectly at its base. You get a smooth surface where the grain is still visible but not in the form of huge peaks and deep valleys, a surface that can withstand the scrutiny of close-up miniature photography. -
Hello, everyone. I am a semi-retired 67-year old Nevadan and have built Model Airways model aircraft in the past. I am embarking on the Model Shipways brig, Syren. It is, to say the least, an ambitious project but it's also best suited for my tastes and skill sets. I have pored over the threads herein and spent a couple of weeks (literally!) reading the manual provided by Chuck Passaro (my hero). One question looms: Is there anything in particular that you can recommend, guide or even warn me about when building this model? Please let me know! I am starting the beading lines and bevels in the bulkheads, et al. today. I move slowly. Thanks!

Hi. I'm just waiting for the arrival of my first model in 35 years. And I know this is a big leap from way back then. So I'm also doing an airfix H.M.S. Catty Sark in between. Hopefully to retain what's left of my insanity. The reason I'm starting this thread is, I suppose obvious in a way. Help advice and tips. But the real reason is decades ago I was young and able to conquer the world. As we all were. Now I'm in a slow slide of disability. And I suppose you could call this my Swan Song. Go out with a bang eh. At least I'll have a boat waiting at the end :-). But in the meantime I'm wanting to make this one to remember. And as I have issues with mobility, vision, and dexterity oh and memory. Any advice, as to what others have done or trick to make thing simpler. Will be gratefully welcomed. As well as a few other choice comments I'm sure I'll raise. Feel free to point out any pratfalls I make as I hope to share the build on here as well. If not here then in the appropriate part of the forum. (Moderators. Please feel free to move this where ever you feel it belongs. I apologise in advance for the many errors, and faux pars I'll make) So as Nelson said "England Expects" and with your kind help this jolly jack English man wil rise to the occasion. So please shout up and tell me whatever you feel needs saying that will make this journey simpler. Even if it's already been said. I don't mind being treated like a idiot it gives me something to reach for. But if I can avoid mistakes it's better than correcting them. Thanks in advance Izack(Izzy) Madd
