    1956 - The Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria and the Swedish ocean liner Stockholm collide in a heavy Atlantic fog off the island of Nantucket on the New England coast. Fifty-one passengers and crew were killed in the collision, which ripped a great hole in the broad side of the Italian vessel Andrea Doria all 1,660 survivors were rescued from the ship before it sunk late the next morning.        

    1959 - SR.N1 hovercraft crosses the English Channel from Calais, France to Dover, England in just over 2 hours.
    1990 - USS Cimarron rescues 25 refugees adrift southeast of Subic Bay, Philippines.

  7. 1813- Sailing Master Elijah Mix attempts to blow up British warship Plantagenet with a torpedo near Cape Henry, Virginia.

    1915 - The steamer Eastland overturns in the Chicago River, drowning between 800 and 850 of its passengers who were heading to a picnic.       
    1944 - Following 43 days of naval gunfire and air bombardment, Naval Task Force lands Marines on Tinian.

    1963 - The iconic Bluenose II was launched in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The schooner is a major Canadian symbol.

    2009 - The MV Arctic Sea, reportedly carrying a cargo of timber, is allegedly hijacked in the North Sea by pirates, but much speculation remains as to the actual cargo and events.

    1958 - USS Nautilus (SSN-571) departs Pearl Harbor for first submerged transit of North Pole.
