cobra1951 reacted to Nirvana in 18th Century Longboat by Nirvana - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:48
Even though I don't have much of pictures to present at the moment, I have been working on the longboat.
One thing that happened was the tip of the gaff got broken. It was an easy surgery.

Thanks gentlemen!
(Turned 34 and cutting the 0,5 mm blade strips. Wasted 1 oar so far...snapped while turning)
Received some books.
The VOC Duyfken is on my Christmas wish list and the Osprey Hoplite book will be handy soon, because I ordered some miniatures.
I won't plaster my builds with miniature soldiers, but 1 or 2 to add some atmosphere and to give it a sense of scale.
And...it's been a while since I painted miniatures. It's fun to do some on the side.
Never a dull moment
Robin (espresso and a Frapin VSOP cognac atm)

Quite so Mike, and a single bottle won't do either ... Robin you'll be parched before you're halfway through

Thanks Robin! I don't know if anyone is more anxious to see me return to building than I am but on the plus side, when I do sit down I will have the itch big time and good things tend to happen then.
Plus, the move means that I get the new ship yard which means I will finally have the room to start Le Soleil Royal which has been sitting across the room tormenting me since July.

First things first and we wait patiently until you settle down again....or at least...we try

I know it's been a little while since my last update but I've been around just not in the shipyard as much this past week. We are under three weeks till we start moving so I'm having to spend more time packing and getting things ready to go. Of course to add to the fun work has picked up as we just started four jobs and picked up two more this past week. I'm hopeful that I will get some ship building time in the near future, maybe tonight if I'm lucky!
The foremast is coming along nicely. I've finished the top platform and the lower rail is in place. I have to make the supports for the upper rail and then the rail itself. It will be some time before I can step the foremast as it does have a lot of blocks that will need to be installed first. I made the mistake long ago of trying to install the blocks to the mast after the shrouds were on and swore I'd never make that mistake again.
If I can get some more done I will try to update with some new pictures in the next couple days.

Thanks paul, I had already done most of what you suggest, apart from the fake coils. Now that is one to remember!

Go with the flow ... the wood will tell you what to do I wish you good fortune making the oars. A good decision to make them all in succession
See yah (in a week's time???)
Cheers

Sometimes it is just easier to push through and do a bunch at a time. Monotonous yes but then you are done! Off to a good start and I know that when you are done they will be another great addition to your bireme.

Nice little starter kit you have chosen

I hung my hammocks on the 2 hooks furthest away from the cannon tools and i made the ropes a bit longer so they hung lower away from the gun port rigging. That way i was able to leave them all in the open position as the look better to me open and they did not foul the tools

Nice job Bryan
Those hammocks are definitely a bit of a pain, mostly because of the folded edges making them stiff
The reason the plans and booklet differ is the plans are from the original kits, when they did an update they added the booklet but did not change the plans to reflect the changes they made, but it all works out in the end as you have found

Don't sell yourself short! Judging by the quality of what you have done here, you are totally ready for it.

Thanks guys.
Praise indeed Paul re. the ladder, considering it was your work I pinched the idea from! Again the larger scale make things like the ladder that bit easier, but I am pleased with it.
I take your point(s) guys regarding the hammocks. Some ideas to bear in mind for other projects. I might just get away with it (hammocks not fouling the tools too much) but we'll see. Currently struggling rigging the cannon - especially on the "inside"!
Thanks again.
(BTW has anyone come across any similar large scale kits? I'm really loath to move back down to a much higher (lower?) scale again! There's a 1:90 waiting in the wings which I'm frankly not relishing. I may have to investigate building from scratch, but fear I'm just not skilled enough).

As long as you don't break them ...
Thinning the looms further .... I really am curious if you'll manage easily

cobra1951 reacted to Pieman in Gunboat William by Pieman - Caldercraft - Scale 1:32
Many thanks for that. I think I will do what you suggest and do some measuring and marking of bulkheads to give me an idea of how the remaining planks will lie.
Cheers, Jack

Thanks Frank....and thanks to all who follow, like or just drop in.
I like the oars also, but I think I can thin down the shaft just a tad bit more...also a somewhat more pronounced transition between the shaft and the loom.
It's good to look at my own photo's with an open mind.
Back to work now...oars to make and hearts to fiddle with.
More soon,
Robin
