  1. Your ESSEX is a piece of art! I'm well behind, just finishing the inner planking with some leftover holly. Finishes nicely. Now starting the pocket strips. Need to get those right. I think I'll leave the interior natural as you did. I probably should have heeded your words about not continuing the model when the problems with it became more obvious. But I bulled ahead and with the help of your blog, I THINK I'm passed the worst. Now to find some decent black paint! Best, Terry
  2. Well, Bob cautioned me about starting; but like a dummy, I did anyway! Sort of glad I did, cause once I got the fairing close to right, she looks pretty good. Just a lot of extra time fitting the bulkheads, cause the slots were too tight, and the fairing. Coppering now, which I've never done. So a lot of experimenting with that.
  3. good jig idea. Never coppered before, therefore experimented on lengths of tape to comfortably use. Went from full length, much twisting, etc., to very short, to pieces about 1/3 total length, which I could handle more easily. Tried the tool I made with blunted nails. Found it didn't work too well for me. Finally took the punch I was using to enscribe the lines, and used it to make the nail impressions. Worked very well as it made the right "punch", and I was able to place them easily where I felt they looked the best. Long job, and have taken time away to do other tasks. Terry
  4. starting to copper. using the longer strips and made up a jig with nails to simulate a rather random nail pattern/your suggestion. would rather have done coppering after the decks, but just ordering the material. don't laff, but I can't forward pics....lookout, I might drive an hr S and hand carry her to u! Terry
  5. just checked with Jeff at Hobbymill. He can do my order now of Holly for deck. He checked your order and he said u only got 4 packs and no wider stuff for margin. That right? He doesn't have a polkan, so I'll send him some dimensons. Thanks, Terry
  6. thanks. your pics of the planking, which is beautifully done, look to be larger than the 1/16" x 1/8" Basswood supplied with the kit. Just wondered as I've had a tough time with the planking, shaping the bulkheads to get a reasonably fair run of the planks. I've done better on others, lots of sanding and filler, therefore I've decided to either stain or paint. Terry
  7. Bob, what size planks did you use. And, where areas were left natural, were those stained or or just polyed? Thanks, Terry
  8. I'm planking her now. If anyone else is working with the old kit as I am, be prepared for a lot of work on the bulkheads to assure a fair run of the planks. This was also a "surprise", and quit time consuming. My Dremel worked overtimne. Terry
  9. not the old kit that I've been building with Raffin's log. It;s about 5 1/2" wide.. Terry
  10. Chuck has some very nice blocks, hooks, gun carriages on his site. First site I've seen actual hooks, 2 sizes, available. Struggling with stern framing. Very fragile pieces to cut out and assemble. Relied on Bob's pictures more than the plan and book. Good thing two sets of windows/ I know I'll have fun inserting them w/o breaking or loosing! Terry
  11. started! frames in, had to force them a bit. built up the aft 4/your early pics. started g ports on star side up to frame 3. how much did you build up 1 & 2? can't tell on the pics. is that what u did? not touching stern framing until basic skeleton completed. that looks tricky! Cheers, Terry
  12. Again, I learn so much watching your work, wonderful! Terry stop the rain; leaving for FL Weds.....
  13. I have most of the same items on my workbench as you do, but the results aren't the same. Ho come? Cheers, Terry
  14. For what it's worth, I got an e mail today from T Snow at ME. H e says they won't know what the corrections will be until they hear from the designer. Then, they will send out a list, at which time those wanting corrections will be able to select those they need. Terry In the mean time, I continue to be amazed at Bob's artistry. Would u consider opening a school to teach us less talented some of your skills!
  15. I got a strange answer from the Parts Dept at ME when I asked what they were doing, if anything, about corrections to the ESSEX kit. It was as if they knew nothing about the problems. Has anyone asked them about replacement parts besides me? Has anyone else tried to complete the model besides Bob? I'm really sort of confused about the whole matter. Whether to continue on or wait longer. Sam, if u read this, what do you think? Cheers, Terry
  16. Has anyone else asked for replacement parts to date? Not sure what parts were being redone by ME. I remember that Sam had been working on that before January, but what were the results? Terry
  17. Bob, I'm learning a lot by watching your work on ESSEX. Especially some small details like grates and bitts, etc. Trying to incorporate on my present build the LIVELY. Haven't heard from ME about new parts for my old ESSEX kit.. But I stopped at your suggestion after the doing the frames. Have your "bookmarked" pages here to help me whenever I go back to the ESSEX. Waiting to hear from ME on any new parts they may be sending us old kit owners. Thanks for the great pictures! Terry
