Thanks, CiscoH, Håkan, davec and JJ, and all who are looking in and liking.

Yes, I like the "workaday" stowed look better than perfectly coiled lines.  The inspiration came from seeing how the working carronade on the Niagara replica ship had been tied down.   There is a photo of it earlier in this log (post #116), but here it is again--

My take on it is a little different (simpler to accomplish), but retains the idea of wrapping the tackle falls back and forth across the top of the carronade.

The 6-pounder long guns have been installed--

Now it's time to put the ship away again--

And continue work on Oneida's spars--

    All for now,
    Ron

I spent the last week lashing down the carronades--

At the bow are the tackles for the two 6-pounder cannon, and also their breeching lines.

The two carriages are nearing completion here, black monofilament fishing line was used for the truck "pins"--

After they were finished, fitting the breeching lines was next.  One end was lashed to it's eyebolt and temporarily fixed into the bulwark.  The line was checked for length, allowing for a loop around the cascabel, and the fastening to the other eyelet--

The cascabel loop was temporarily tied, as well as the first lashing of the eyebolt, and the length was checked again--

As the first breeching line was finished, the second could be made up more quickly using the first as a guide, without needing to check it in place on the ship--

I've reached my stopping point for the day.

Once again, thanks to everyone for the positive responses. The last two photos remain to be posted. This week I participated in the Class C World Championship (NAVIGA organization) where I received a gold medal for the Le Gros Venter model. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Gerard Delacrox for his technical support during the construction. My next model will again be according to Mr. Delacroix's plans - L'Amarante.

Forecastle guardrail is installed with iron stanchions. The stanchions for the gangway are double stanchions with a revolving branch.

    j21896 got a reaction from tomas1970 in HMS Mars by j21896 - Caldercraft - 1:64 - modified kit
    Companionway

To get myself back into building after a year-long layoff, I decided to tackle a “model within the model”.  Early on I decided that I would like to add a companionway deck house, so that’s what I chose to tackle a couple of weeks ago.

The design was pretty much ad-libbed, as I didn’t have any good reference photos.  Hopefully it’s at least close to proper for the period – I think the Caldercraft HMS Snake kit includes a similar type structure with a sliding top hatch.  I think it kind of looks like it belongs.  In any event, it will have to do for my version of Mars.

Sitting atop the coaming, the highest point of the roof at the hatch is about 3’ 9” off the deck.  The doors are each 3 feet tall by 16 inches wide, for a total opening width of 32 inches.  The hinges are blackened brass.

    Cheers,
    Robert

PS.  It is very easy to create and add to a build log on the new and improved MSW site!  A big thanks to all the admins for all the work you do!  Glad to have MSW back on-line!

j21896 reacted to Beef Wellington in HMS Snake by Beef Wellington - FINISHED - Caldercraft - Scale 1: 64 - First wooden ship build
    Ensign...conclusion:
A tiny bit of steam was used to soften the ensign while various "rounded implements" with different radii (dowel, metal file shafts etc.) were used to try and introduce various folds.  I'd love to be able to describe a reproduceable scientific process, but thats not what happened.  It was really just a continual serious of tweaks, leaving to dry and most importantly trying not to introduce creases.  Steam worked fine to initially soften and allow the structural folds to be introduced, but isn't really a good ongoing solution as it tends to undo any previous work.  Real care is also needed to not 'over wet' the painted flag, not sure I was completely successful here.  Final tweaking was done by wetting very gently any tools used and trying to hold in position while it dried and the fold takes.

...and with that milestone, I'm declaring this build FINISHED!

This was my first wooden ship build, and first model I've built for over 30 years.  Its taken probably 8 years to get this far off an on (probably 7 years more than it should), but I have to say I'm glad I was able to finish her.  I've come to realize that I enjoy the journey more than the destination, and I certainly experienced moments when I could easily have put her aside permanently, mainly due to me recognizing unfixable mistakes or compromises that that could so easily been enhanced had I known more at the time.  Given the length of time taken to complete, this progression in knowledge and execution is very apparent to me, but I hope is less apparent to others.  All in all, this was a most enjoyable project that exposed me to the necessary knowledge and techniques that I hope build on and leverage in the future.  I still need to make up a protective case, and will probably continue to see needed fixes and touchups before she (hopefully) is put in a place of rest.  I would like to thank this entire community for the ongoing help, support and encouragement - without which I would not have reached this point.

Few pictures to celebrate, apologies that these aren't exactly studio quality.

Thank you guys for your feedback. My experience with hand carving is minimal and not very good. Therefore, the use of CNC milling maschne for carvings seemed to be the only possible solution. But even the actual production of cnc carvings requires knowledge of several computer programs to create a 3D model and prepare data for the CNC milling machine. So it's not just about turning on cnc and waiting.
Answer to scrubbyj427 - CNC maschine is small maschine made in China, but so far I'm satisfied.
Now some new pictures - stem.

Thank you guys for nice comments.
Scrollwork and moldings are done with CNC milling maschine. The same situation is for the parts on next pictures. All carvings are made with CNC. It is likely that some of you will condemn this process, but you will not stop technical progress. I would be quite interested in your opinion on the use of modern techniques for creating carvings.

Thanks every one and the happy birthday's and  comments are well received.  Greg thought I would let you know but the rudder does work and moves from stbd to port. I probably will put in a stop some place which should prevent me from wanting to put it in the tub and take it sailing. Well maybe not the tub. Ed, this is one of the more interesting things I have done on her along with tackles for the gun port lids that you can see in the photo's. Once again thank you folk's and hope to have another up date before my next birthday. 🐵

Hi Guys. Being that today is my birthday, figure I would do a small update. This time its on the upper gun deck along with the tiller and the track which it runs in with making and installing beams, hanging and lodging knees that has to have a cast in them so they clear the gun ports.  As I said some place you have to fit 3 to four parts in place temporary in order to glue one part in permanently. Doesn't seem one gets much done  but has long as you are enjoying it or cares. Thanks guys hope you enjoy the photos.

To Druxey - thanks for informations, I discussed this situation with my friend who had the same problem. I cover these lead items with clear varnish and the whole hull is then preserved with the wax. I hope that it will be OK.
