Personally, I like the strength and powerful looks of the American Clippers. Therefore, I would opt for the Model Shipways Flying Fish or the Bluejacket Red Jacket-- both good kits. But that's just me. I have seen some pretty impressive models of the British Clippers such as Cutty Sark and Thermopylae too. Bill M.

Essex - Process and corrections to the new Model Expo Kit
kb466 replied to samueljr's topic in Wood ship model kits
Sam, Good to hear you are hard at work on the corrections. Personally I am going to wait for the fixes... And the masting and rigging supplemental kit. I assume that is still in the works too. I have quite a bit on my plate right now, so I can wait. Bill M. -
Essex - Process and corrections to the new Model Expo Kit

I believe there are several of us waiting on the fixes for the Essex kit. Seeing Rafine's excellent work just makes us that much more anxious. I think we'll hear from Sam (the kit's designer) soon. I'm anxious to get the masting and rigging set too! Bill M. -

Essex - Process and corrections to the new Model Expo Kit

Sam, I'm writing this as I wait between flights at the Denver airport. Can't wait to get home to dive further into my Essex kit. I'm not going to start building it though. I will wait for the corrections to be made-- whatever they may be. As has been said, I appreciate your professional approach to getting this all straightened out. I know you and ME will make a great kit even better! Bill M. -
Well, I've had a chance to look over my Essex kit, the instruction booklet and the plans. Being a longtime fan of this frigate, I was expecting great things of this kit. I was not disappointed-- in fact, the kit exceeds my expectations. First, the kit looks to be well researched and is well engineered. Yes, I know about the problems reported in the kit-bashed Essex thread, but I have complete confidence that Sam and Model Expo will make the necessary corrections. Another impression is that this kit will build into a large impressive model. I should have expected this, knowing the scale, but it impressed me nonetheless. I intend to build mine fully rigged with Sam's announced masting and rigging supplemental kit. When finished out fully rigged, the kit will be particularly impressive and imposing. Anyway, I am quite pleased with this kit. Good job, Sam! Bill M.

Well, as soon as I open my mouth, asking when Model Expo will resume shipping kits, I just had my Essex kit delivered to me! I haven't had a chance to go over it in detail, but I am certainly happy to have it. I suppose this kit does not have the corrections that Sam and Eric have discussed and I will be in touch with Model Expo to request the corrected parts when they become available. Thanks to Sam and Model Expo! Bill M.

Sam, Thanks for the response. I'm keeping the faith! I had missed the "bashed kit" thread, so was unaware that you and ME were working on corrections to the kit. I am glad to hear that you and ME are working on these fixes. I can certainly wait a while longer since it means getting a correct kit. I am still looking forward to it. It looks like it will be great! Also, still looking forward to the rigging and masting supplemental kit! Bill M.

Thanks Jaxboat. I wasn't aware of that build log. But now that I have read it, I fully understand the delay in shipping kits. I am pleased that Sam and Model Expo are taking steps to correct the problems. I would much rather have a correct kit than one that is hurried to me and wrong. Bill M.

Eric, Thank you for the update. I have never received the Essex kit I preordered and prepaid for. Any idea when Model Expo will resume shipping the updated kits? Thanks! Bill M.
-
Torrens, Go to the Model Expo website and type "Essex" in the search box. It will come up and you can "preorder" it. There is no discount at present and full price is $499, so you might want to wait. I preordered mine in July 2012 when they advertised a preorder price of $299. It will be a great kit-- it looks like Sam and Model Expo did a bang-up job on it. Bill M.
-
No, not yet-- still waiting to hear if it has shipped but not a word so far. Bill M.
-
Great news! I had a feeling ME and Sam would be fixing anything that needed fixing. It stands to make a great kit even better. Bill M.
-
Eric, thanks for the update. Do you have any idea when you will ship the remaining preorders? Bill M.
-
Still waiting on my pre-ordered Essex kit. Has anyone received theirs in the last week or so?...Or received a shipping notice? Are they still shipping out the kits? Bill M.
-
As advised, I am reposting this here in this thread-- I'm still waiting for mine to ship. Has anyone else received notice of some more recent shipments? That said, I would love to hear what others think of the kit. Bill M.
