frame protrudes from deck

Thanks Nigel, this may be a dumb question but could you clarify what you mean by "using the deck as a template" while fairing them? -
I am not sure if I am doing something wrong, but the first bulkhead on my model (corel scotlands) protrudes slightly more than the deck. I checked with the plans and everything seems to be fine. I'll post some pictures: The reason I am confused is because I think it's normal for the front of the frame to clear the deck but the back should be aligned. This makes shaping the frame easy: filing the only the front projection while leaving the outline of the frame intact. In my case, the front and back projection of the frame clears the deck? Any suggestions, fixes, solutions to something I'm doing wrong. I haven't glued the deck on yet. Thanks!!

Thanks! It's exactly like the plan, I checked. It's just that the back part of the frame juts out a little. The front can be filed down but the back should be the same as the deck I think. Do you remember if you filed down the front notch on the deck to push it forward a little? That might fix the problem. Otherwise, maybe the extra back projection is fine it's very little, and I think I might go away as I shape the bulkheads...

I managed to get a good shape on the #17 back filler. I'll post pics soon. For the front fillers did you end up cutting a bit of the flat part of both #15 and #16 to be able to fit them in?

After a laborious effort, I managed to get the deck off with a scalpel. It's pretty beat up near the stern from the process but that's ok since it won't be visible in the end. I also filed down the opening for the deck house. I can get the bulkheads to be symmetric now but I think bulkheads number one jut out too much. The "back projection" clears the deck. Maybe it's just me, but what do you guys think? Did anyone happen to take pictures at this stage (after gluing the deck but before filing down the bulkheads).

Alright, I'm back. I attached the deck today, the last bulk head was a little low so I adjusted it by adding some material. After attaching the deck however, I used rubber bands to hold it together while the glue dries. Unfortunately during the process the deck moved slightly to one side and left the bulkheads on the right side protruding more than the left - especially the first bulk head near the bow. I measured the bulkheads and they are perfectly symmetric themselves, it's just the deck itself is leaning to one side slightly. If I sand them down, I think I might end up with an asymmetric boat when it is planked. Does any one have any neat suggestions to fix this? I'll attach some pictures of the situation? I don't think using a solvent like acetone and trying again is any option since I used gorilla glue...

Yes, so we should file down only the top of the bulkheads to make it flush with the deck and form the 'hips'? Do you have any pictures of that stage?

I'm from montreal too. Go habs go! Yes, please post a picture from the top view please. I'm not sure how to file them down and still retain the same same complicated shape. I'll post a pic of mine in the next coming days. I've messed up one of the bulk heads trying to file it down, but Corel is sending me a new one .

It looks good, I haven't glued mine on yet because I'm out of town. Could you please take a picture directly from above. Do your bulkheads extend beyond the deck in that view? When trying the deck on before gluing I noticed that some of mine do a little I'm not sure of we are supposed to adjust them so that they are completely flush with the deck but I think we are. I think it would be difficult tho given their flowing shape. Maybe someone else has input on this?

I actually want to give it a nice vynil finish when it's done instead of paint. Like this: http://www.building-model-boats.com/images/corel-scotland-21750363.jpg But if you want to pain it, I definately vote airbrush too.

I was trying to shape a frame for my Corel Scotland but It was really late and I got carried away. I took off way too much on one side by accident. I heard Corel has good customer support and I got in touch with them but they autoreplied (in italian) that they were off on vacation till August 22. Does anyone have a suggestion of what I can do? Is there anyway to fix this? I guess I could head over to a carpenter and see if he can make me one according to the plan. Would Corel even be willing to sell an individual frame? Thanks!

I have the same problem as you. I think for number 15, you can adjust it just by cutting away just the right amount from the flat part so that it doesn't clear the deck anymore. That's definitely easier than trying to shape the actual curved part with a file or something. Maybe cdogg has a good idea to shape #17 though, I don't.

Hey sygreen, Nice build log, I just started mine too. I have a part that looks like 17 but is longer in my kit. Maybe we are supposed to cut it in two? By the way, was part 12 (the walnut strip you glued to the keel) already tapered/rounded at the front when u you glued it or did you do that yourself? I'm assuming you have to cut it also to fit it on the stern? If so how did you round it like that?

Hi everyone, I decided to go with Corel's Scotland kit as my first build. I started it a few days ago, but first, an unboxing picture: Getting the bulkheads to fit into the keel properly took a lot of adjusting with needle files. Once I was satisfied with the alignment, I glued with them in place with glue gun and CA. A long nozzle attachment for my glue gun might be very useful for hard to reach places. Final result looks like this: Can someone who is building this let me know whether part 12 (3x3 Walnut strip) comes already tapered at the front end like in the middle picture on page 7 in the instructions? I did find Walnut strip, but it has flat ends. Also, am I supposed to cut it to fit it on the stern? Thanks!
