  1. as we used to say, " back in the days when ships were ships and men were men" could be the reason, but i thought that most of the jeep carriers and light carriers were just conversions of other ship designs by addition of a flat top, regardless, you have to feel for the sailors on even todays high tech tin cans, mother nature can be a real MOTHER!!!
  2. i got your drift lou,, only wish my atlantic experience had been scale,, but i have to say it was an experience!!!! we were on a 20,000 ton uss san diego,,,i cant imagine the wild ride guys on a 3-4,000 ton tin can experienced,,, no roller coaster in the world can compare!!!!
  3. north atlantic conditions???yeah, i know about them,,11 days at 18 knots in january, rota spain to norfolk,,man, what a ride!!!! 40 foot seas all the way, anybody wants to feel like an inconsequential speck in the scheme of the universe they need to spend some time in the north atlantic in the winter!!!
  4. keeping that red side down might be a trick lou,, the damn thing is long and skinnyyyy!! would like to go with the geared motors but just cant see paying more for the chinzy little gear box than the motor
  5. thanks lou,, the motors are sold by harbor models as boat motors, brushed dc motors, i imagine the 7000 no load rpm would be cut way down in the water, other than physical dimensions they offer no other specs, as for batteries i intend to go with a gel or even a sealed lead acid battery for the weight and amp/hr capacity, the boat is set for two motors and props
  6. hi lou just wondering if i'm on the right track? 2- 500 size direct drive motors, 7000 no load rpm at 6 volts, maybe a 1 3/4 inch prop,,would be the cheapest,,,not looking for hydroplane speeds just something realistic,, this thing is 6 feet long after all
  7. guess i'll have to mount some sails and get an electric fan to make her go
  8. have been procrastinating a bit lately, too damn cold, global warming my ****, been trying to engineer the means of locomotion for this 6 foot beast, my prop shafts are 5/32, not the most widely used dimension making it a bit more complicated as far as buying components for the drive line, open to any suggestions in the way of motor size, prop dia. etc,,can swing up to a 2 inch props
  9. progress report, 3 months 1 week and at least 500 hours, still many knick knacks to install,, than the boilers and steam turbines,,
  10. against all odds and common sense it actually works, got all the 5 inchers, torpedo tubes and 2 bofors to rotate, somebody pinch me!!!
  11. not more capable lou, just learned from past mistakes didnt have room for pulleys on the 40's, tried going thru the shafts them self but without the mechanical advantage of the pulley it put too much stress on the whole structure, thus the arms..still dont know if one heavy duty servo will have enough juice to work the whole apparatus and if there will be too much slack and stretch in the ropes to make it all worthwhile,,, we shall see
  12. jump in with both feet K and dont worry about relevant work or hobby skill, you have 70 years of relevant skills under your belt, after 40 yrs as a nuclear inspector and no "relevant" skills this was my first scratch built model, you'll go from frustration to elation and back many times, but thats what keeps our blood pressure up,,,good luck
  13. figure 8 i believe would turn the 5 and the director in opposite direction lou,,the problem is the proximity of the 40's "shaft" to the wall , cant mount a "pulley" on them and the flimsiness of the superstructure construction, its all just 1/16 basswood,,,i went thru several "engineering changes",,,plus with the 40's counter rotating we got them damn kamikazies coming and going
  14. you do know, bill, when they say pictures dont lie? thats a lie!!! but thanks anyway
  15. no video but i got the 5 inch and the director rotating 90 deg. port and starboard and the bofors 45 fore and aft, think it took about 10 ECR's before i was happy with it,,,,rube goldberg would be damn proud of this contraption gonna tie the 5 inch with the other fivers and maybe a couple more AA's mounts,,, if i dont shoot myself first!!!!
  16. think i might have done a dumb thing,,,decided to make the 5 inch mounts, gun director and maybe some of the bofors and 20 mm guns mobile,,,,at the start of the build i made a prototype 5 inch that rotated and elevated the barrel but decided against it due too the complexity and was going just static,,now i think i will just rotate everything, hopefully with just one servo,,,,,we will see!!!!!
  17. now Bill !!! my eye still hurts from the BIG wink,, just injecting a little levity into the conversation no offense meant P.S. looks like you have a lot more salt time than me,, naval air , took one cruise to the Med my last year, thought it would be embarrassing to admit to 4 years in the navy and not having set a foot on a ship
  18. you're about the the gun mounts tiger, as reklein said, i just wanted to get a look see, right now i'm debating if i want to go ahead and make the 5 inchers and the gun director mobile,, as for the blast shields, i just copied the guns on the lindberg plastic kit, as with the rest of the model its not super detailed or scale,,,, P.S. what does a guy in idaho know about ships??? P.S.S. my apologies idaho, you guys did sail the prairie schooners
  19. she got a coat of primer this morning, i couldn't resist the temptation to see what she'll look like so i put up some of the out buildings on her deck, had to go outside for some decent lighting, couple more months to outfit her and than sea trials
  20. so, i have not been skylarking, been , want to say planking but that just doesnt sound right for a destroyer, so been plating the hull, one coat of epoxy and a light sanding so far... taken 40 1/16x3x18 sheets of basswood did, however, discover a talent for a new avocation in my off time,,,,,quilting!!!!!
  21. in my younger days i worked for a guy whose favorite saying, when confronted with the inadequacy of our equipment was " do the best with what you got" sailor glue?? this begs to lewd and crude but i'll just say plain old CA
  22. so while waiting for the hull plate to arrive i've been making some of the small stuff, like the whaleboat canopies, and i'm willing to bet this is the only boat here with a pair of boxer shorts and panties as constituent parts, yes indeed, the little lady contributed a pair of her finest to the cause,,, what a women!!!!! and willingly i might add,, guess its true when they say " a family that builds together stays together"
  23. so i put away the drill press and brought out the soldering iron,, got the drive shaft and the steering paddles temporarily mocked up,, took longer than i thought, cypherin on the abacus is a bit slow...waiting for the neighbor to turn some bushings for the shafts on his nice craftsman mini lathe,, one i have been trying unsuccessfully to buy for five years,, and to add insult to injury he bought it at the estate sale for the previous owner of our house
