If you do decide about magnifiction, the Optivisor with a Quasar led light kit is pretty nice. This company also makes an Acuvisor,  but the lenses are plastic where the Optivisor's are optical glass. The Optivisor is worth the extra cost for the for the clarity (I started with the Acuvisor). That is cool about your son. Let's get him going on a build log of his own!

BTW, my swollen head deflated as soon as I saw your compass' brass mounting! I wonder if I could pull that off at 1:25 scale...

    Hey Buck,
Thanks for the info on the magnifiers. I have titanium implants in my ears, what about bionic eyes....eh, the Optivisor is probably much cheaper!

I'm sure with your super-vision 1:25 would definately work. I tried to keep the compass the same size as your 1:16 conversion, and just eye-balled the rest to look even. I was too afraid of seizing the whole thing up by soldering, so I carefully applied thin CA to the tips. Thanks for the compliment, now I'm stuck in my room again!

Thank you so much Buck, CaptainSteve, Keith and for all who liked my post. I need to build a neck brace to hold my bloated head up!

Keith, thanks for  the congrats.  Turns out my son is quite the thinker and tinker like his old man. I'm going to see if he wants to have a go at one of my models, I have a feeling he might put us all to shame.

CaptainSteve, thanks. I just bought 4.4 oz(123.2g) lot of steampunk gears, so some new ideas may still lay in waiting, I've been turning my wheels on a way to make a functional dial.

Buck, thanks to you for directional inspiration for the compass. Its not nearly as finite as yours. I broke a couple of the outer rings, the four holes weakens the ring so one false move and its do over. I had just  bought myself a new dremel and a bit set 61-80, holy crap those bits are tiny. I'm still too stubborn to get a magnification instrument so if I go much smaller I may have to cave in. I was just happy that I was able to make the self-balancing ring functional. Now for a working dial and lens, they're still in the squirrel cage.

    Hey Buck,

Thanks for the scale mod to 1:16. I got an idea in my mind, just gotta finish these dang oars. Works back in full swing after the holidays so my build might slow a bit.

    Hi all

Please find the final photos of Mystic on her new display stand. As such, the construction of this classic motor yacht is now finished.

Pls enjoy and thanks to all who liked and commented during Mystic's construction.

    All the best!

    Hi all

Mystic now has a bit more detail added. These include the props and rudders (which still require final shaping, sanding and painting). A spotlight on the wheelhouse roof adjacent to the radar mast has been added. On the fore of the superstructure, two Dorade air vents have been added; whilst the finishing of the mast, davit and rigging are progressing well.

Mystic's hull has also been painted, as has the dinghy's hull. The dinghy still requires finessing and finishing off, eg fixing up the seat boards and sanding/painting of the hull.

    Hope you enjoy the photos!

Merry Xmas and all the best for 2015!

Hi all. Just did a little bit more work on Mystic. This included adding another coat of thin paint to the dinghy's hull as well as Mystic's, doing some more work on the mast and boom and adding eyelets and blocks where appropriate. I've also added the windlass and located it on the foredeck.

    Hope you enjoy the photos!

    Cheers

Hi everyone! I've been pretty crook the past few weeks, so, I haven't done much on Mystic. However, last night I was able to add some detail to the dinghy, thereby making it look more like a dinghy than it did before. I've also added the chocks to sit the dinghy on. I've started to sand the hull with wet and dry sandpaper, hence the patchy appearance of Mystic's hull.

Next, I'll need to finish the mast and davit, anchor, windlass, painting, etc, etc. The dinghy will also be painted, as well.

    Hope you enjoy the photos!

I did it! I did it! Well, I sorta did it. The compromise was that I couldn't do the hull as a clinker hull, due to its tiny size, difficulty in making the planks thin enough and carving a rabbett line. There are certain realities in size that just can't be overlooked, afterall.

Anyhow, the hull has five frames, including the transom. It's planked with wood, although the frames and keel are made out of card.

There's still much finishing off, including the deck boards, painting, oars, etc that need to be fitted. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy the photos!!!

    I'm a happy man!

    Hi everyone.

Mystic's progress continues. I've started to add small, but important details to Mystic's superstructure. These include the doors (intentionally left partially open to add life to the ship), the mast and the radar dome (that's the funny white thing at the top, just in front of the mast). There's more stuff to do, though, such as rigging for the mast, navigation lights, an anchor, windlass, propellers, rudder and stanchions, etc. I'm even contemplating doing a tiny dinghy which could be tied up alongside.

    Anyhow, please enjoy the photos.

    All the best!

Hi everyone. As promised in an earlier post, here are the latest photos of Mystic's interior. The wheelhouse has some added details, including a ship's wheel (which I may redo later on because it doesn't look too good), a benchseat at the rear of the wheelhouse, the helmsman's chair and some other sundry details to bring it to life. Below decks, I've added a rear bunk in the stern cabin and steps up the whhelhouse. There's even a Toilet in the WC in the rear cabin, although you'll have to take my word for it as it's so small (less than 1mm approx high), that I can't photograph it well.

There's other details in the forward cabins, such as cushions on the settee berths, etc, but they can't be easily photographed either.

    Still more work to go...

    Hope you enjoy the photos!

    Cheers and all the best.

Hi all. Thanks Nils, Popeye, Michael, Yves, Mike, Mark and everyone else for your Likes and comments. I've added more detail to Mystic. I'll post more photos later, but in the meantime, have a look at Mystic resting in the palm of a giant's hand! Reminds me of the TV series "Land of the Giants".

All the best and have a great weekend!

Hi all. Mystic now has has her decks installed. Now that that's been done, I think I can return to the interior details. The following photos show the progress so far. The superstructure is temporarily inserted into the hull. Inside, I've also started on the interior of the wheelhouse, whilst the outside has had its first coat of varnish.

    Anyhow, here goes:

    Hi all

I've done some more work on Mystic's cabin, principally the long awning that stretches all the way from the wheelhouse to the stern. The awning and cabin roofs are cutout as well to enable the viewing of the interior.

    Have a great week, everyone!

Hi everyone. Thanks for all your Likes and comments; all of which are greatly appreciated.

Tonight I realised that I couldn't really do too much of the interior because I needed to get the correct heights of the superstructure to build the cupboards, etc. So, I set about building the superstructure out of tiny strips of jarrah veneer. Tricky, to say the least, but I don't think it looks too bad. It's still very rough and will definitely require internal stiffening to get rigidity to the structure; not to mention sanding and finishing. It's a start anyway.

    Hope you enjoy the photos.

    All the best!

Hi everyone! Many, many thanks for all your compliments and comments. Greatly appreciated.

Here are the latest photos so far. I've added some more detail to the engine room, eg fuel tank, exhaust pipe from one of the motors, etc. In the cabins, I've started on the cupboards in the galley.

Still more work to go, but it's heaps of fun.

    All the best!
