That's beautiful planking to have to pull up but I'll bet you recover just fine.

Thought I would let you all get a look at my lash-up after starting the first frame assemble. After going this far it’s obvious that it could easily have been better but I will give it a go to completion of the first frame. Then if I can’t stand it I’ll make some modifications to improve it. The basic idea is OK I think I just should have planned the under framing of the jig giving more thought to the clamps I have on hand and clearances needed to take advantage of their jaw lengths. Next time.

Having read a suggestion by Russ in one of the logs I’m placing the aft futtocks with their templates to the jig and the fore futtocks with their templates facing up to aid shaping the frames once pulled from the jig.

    Ron,
Thanks for that. That's the way I'll leave the walnut for the wales with the exception I'm going to do the wales in Top and Butt strakes.

The Rip Angle jig arrived this afternoon, so I ripped some basswood to the scale top dimension for some Top and Butt plank practice and checking my angles. I drew up my scale plan using the dimensions in Peter Goodwin’s tome “Sailing Man of War 1650 ~ 1850” found on page 52.

Love the jig but what’s not to love about a Model Machines product.  Fun!

Today’s effort was laying out the limber strakes for receiving treenails. Went with the suggestion of one inch treenails and pulled the bamboo down to 0.020”. That’s the smallest treenails I’ve pulled to date. The Byrnes Model Machines draw plate is a jewel.

The limber boards are installed but not permanently should I decide to change them. I did make two applications of Danish Oil natural so I could see how the plank end seams would look. Any comments or suggestions are more than welcome.

I’ll start trying now how to form the garboard strake into the concave section next to the keel. Is this a case requiring the soaking of the cherry in boiling water and clamping to a form?

Hope I’m not smothering all of you with my minutia but here is what I arrived at to cut the bevel into the limber board. My second idea this morning didn’t work out so out came the trusty scraper blades. After marking some limit lines on the rectangular beam I cut to fit in the limber board trough I clamped it down and began to plane away. Taking even pressure light cuts along the length of the beam and checking the limit lines often the bevel was soon formed and consistent from end to end. I was indeed pleased with the way it went.

Yes, the keelson is curved but the limber board is not.

Installing the limber strakes now. While the glue is curing on the last limber strake I’ve started fitting a limber board. The fitting is a bit tedious. Have already thrown one in the trash bin.

Attempted my first detail bit today? Installed the simulated copper bolts that tie the keelson to the keel. I decided to leave them just a little proud of the keelson but if anyone knows that they should be flush with the top of the keelson please let me know. It’s not too late to file them down at this point.

    You’re very welcome Antony.

I have now arrived at the time to move forward to the next step. My framing is far from perfect but I think I’ve reach the point of diminishing returns. There are a few low spots on a couple of the interior frames on the inside but I do believe those will be taken care of when planking and ceilings are installed. Fingers crossed....... we’ll see.

I have installed the keelson and will now decide what process to start next. I do have a few logs I can study that should get me on my way here.

Primary work today on the inside of the frames. Starting to make progress I think. Still using the scrapers and the more I use them, for this task at least, the more I like them. Anyway, a photo at the end of today’s session.

After starting to fair the frames this morning by sanding and not liking my progress I got a couple of cabinet scrapers out. Also have a nice tool for burnishing an edge on a scraper and first rolled an edge of 5 degrees on one scraper and 10 degrees on another. The 10 degree seems to be about right for me in a short test but switch back and forth as I work. I really like the way the scrapers are working, though slow going (which supports Russ’s recommendation  ), with only a small amount of wood being removed in a pass and leaving a nice finish. The frames are leveling out good with the contours continuing to hold their shape.

I’m working the outside of the frames first but the scraper is going to work on the inside too.

    Pleased at this point.

Spent my time in the shop today setting up the gantry building board preparing for the mounting of the frames to the keel. In the mean time I can use the GBB for dry fitting the frames to insure the proper fit before the glue-up starts. Another is simply getting familiar with the board and learning to use its advantages.

Setting up a temporary fence to keep the keel from moving while drilling the bores for the 2-56 tap.

Clamped the Dremel tool to the GBB for drilling the bores.

Taping and mounting the keel to the GBB.

Dry fitting the “C” and “B” frame to the keel.

While not being able to get to the shop until late yesterday evening I did practice installing my first treenails pinning the stained basswood keel and false keel I replaced as the practice piece. Using bamboo the treenails used where pulled to .037” and inserted after applying glue to the bore. I was amazed how fast the pins would grabbed and not budge. First lesson, don't dally, get the nails home quickly. The second photo is a close up of one of the trimmed and sanded treenails which you are just able to see and pointed to with the pencil. When I start applying the treenails to the cherry frame this afternoon we’ll see what contrast occurs between the cherry and the bamboo. The last photos is the tools I used trying the razor saw and the sprue nippers. Both work well but the razor saw is limited to how close you can get to the base of the treenail depending on the location. I’ll be using .039” treenails for the frames.

Now to research where and how many treenails I should use per futtock. Lunch, then back to the shipyard. Fun!

Started on the aft portion of frame "C" and thinking I should pause at this point and work out the fixture that I will use to assemble and glue-up the frames now. I have some idea also of the care I’ll need to take in cutting the keel and keelson notches. After roughing out the notches with the scroll saw I used a small file set and hobby knife for the clean-up and fitting. Kind of slow going but I enjoyed the work.

Near the beginning of my log I stated that I wanted to cut the False Keel from African Blackwood. So I thought I would throw it out here and see what may come back. At this time I’m leaning to the African Blackwood since the contrast between the cherry keel and cherry false keel is so slight.

The picture layout top to bottom is a slice of the African Blackwood that I milled the false keel from. Next is the cherry keel sitting on the African Blackwood false keel. Third is the cherry false keel and last is a glue up of cherry and African Blackwood to test the bond. The glue I used was Titebond Translucent. Seems to be strong.

Bob: One of the first things I noticed with Goodwin’s book is there isn’t an entry in the index for tree nails but I quickly learned their under Trennals.

Joss: Thanks for that. Also, thanks for giving me access to the plan locker.

Larry: I was really getting a twist in my knickers over what wood to use. I appreciate your input very much.

Today: I made new progress and after a clean sweep-down fore and aft we’re underway again. With the good description and photos of a rabbet scraper provided by some of you I tried my hand at making one and the following is the result. The wood I used is Cherry which I had a 2” x 2” x 24” stick of. It’s good to be regrouped and working again thanks to you all.

P.S. I’ll not be using a V gouge anymore for my rabbets now that you all have shown me the way. A custom made tool can put the depth and location spot on. Thanks again to everyone.

Note: The curve you see in these photos is from my lense beinging in wide angle mode at these close views.

I couldn’t stand it any longer and decided to try out my new Byrnes draw plate. I’ve never used a draw plate before and I had never heard of treenails until the start of this year. Anyway, doing some practicing I was very pleased with how well it cut the bamboo and I didn’t end-up with a hand or fingers that needed to be soaked in liniment. It went so well that I now want to try installing some treenails. I know they will not be see, that maybe a good thing, but are there treenails holding the keel and false keel?

In the photo is the bamboo I took from .059 to .033. What a grand tool!

I think I’m getting there now after you all setting me straight. After some practicing today I think I’m in business. I laid out the rabbit with the two stop cuts as Russ suggested and then cleaned out the channel with the V gouge.
