  1. Thanks for the link Mark - that certainly helped a great deal
  2. I have had good success in wetting planks for about 10 - 15 minutes and then temp fixing in place. Once dry, they retain their bent shape very well making glueing and fixing easy. After much searching, I have found the - I found the following tutorials very helpfull which shows the method (and he helped me solve my planking problem ) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ_z4N11O2iXS7GyAsQsSiw
  3. I am busy with the Billing La Toulannaise (think its an old kit) and from what I can gather, the planking wood is ABACHI. Please correct me if I am wrong I have some additional work I want to do and need a matching wood which is slightly darker. Can anyone recommend a matching wood based on their experiences. Just as a further aside, this wood would need to be able to be bent so a fine grain would be preferable. I am going to be blunt and also ask for a good US supplier thereof for us folk stuck out here in the sticks in South Africa Any help appreciated
  4. Welcome! It seems quite a few here are recovering from some illness or another. Its the reflection time we spend in hospital which makes our minds wander to the tall ships and the stars they steered them by
  5. Welcome to MSW. I think many are guilty of starting something which may be beyond their skill levels - then they find MSW
  6. Small world - I am on a farm just outside Brackenfell We must definitely get together and compare notes. Just give me about 6 weeks to complete my treatment and then its game on! From what I have read, the Far East kits leave a lot to be desired. Luckily my shipyard doesnt have any kits from the east! Jeremy
  7. Thanks Pete - that's one swim I dont fancy too much Its the reliability of suppliers which I am after. Still waiting after nearly 4 months for a wood order I placed with a local guy (knowing it had to be imported) - very frustrating I have subsequently decided to do things on my own. I will wait for a small list to finish and then place an order - its just the metric and imperial measurements which still has me googling Jeremy
  8. .... and thats not Oz In fact, Cape Town South Africa! Thanks for the admins/mods who approved my membership. You have NO idea what it means for us folk here in South Africa. Info is scant, hobby shops stock the minimum as far as kits and [cant blame them since importing is a huge hassle and the market isnt here] wood etc and 99% Artesania stuff [one importer who brings in Artesania] I will hopefully, in the foreseeable future, be looking to import some wood etc which is not available here in ZA - if it is, its far above premium price These build logs are heaven sent! Just by browsing I have already learnt so much My current build 2nd build [first was a disaster] is the La Toulannaise from Billing and I am just about complete with the hull planking. So much to learn Thanks for accepting me - humbled to be in the presence of so many experienced people
