I have now completed the spars and sail mountings. As I said above, the ship has arrived in port for a long maintenance stay and in the process of furling the sails. Although the sails are for the Victory 1:100, they worked out well for the Bellona. I learned a lot about sails in this process too. The rigging is now complete also. Now I'm moving on the to finish the ship: anchors, lanterns, flags, etc. Then I have cleanup. This has been a long three years to build! But what a great hobby inside, when there's a pandemic outside.

I am moving right along with putting sails on the spars of the Bellona. All I have left to do is the topgallants. I've decided to mix the treatments between fully furled and clewed up sails. I'm trying to portray Bellona arriving at port, and preparing for a long stay.

The work is truly excellent! Please take a lot of pictures of the rigging, as I will no doubt need them to decode the Bellona instruction diagrams. Thanks so much, Chris

I have been studying how to properly do furled sails. Harland's book is particularly valuable. I have started with the bowsprit spars. My first try was too bulky, so I did it again. Here is the result below. I've started the foremast spars, maybe with various furl/partial unfurl types for variety.

I agree with you, harlequin. The rigging needs a lot of study: most of my time is figuring WHAT to do; the DOING is quick!

Your work is excellent. I started my Bellona two and a half years ago, and followed your build ever since. You helped me solve a number of problems. I just started a build log myself. Take a look when you get a moment. Christopher Carl

Thanks guys for the welcoming!! The sail set (Victory 1:100) that I ordered arrived today. I was scared that it would not fit properly. Victory is slightly bigger than Bellona. To my wonderment THE SAILS FIT!!! See the picture below. From the right: foremast, mainmast, Mizzen (above) and Bowsprit (below). YEA!!! Now I have to decide what furling to make on each spar.

I have been working on this build for two-and-a-half years. I have followed harlequin's build all along. His work is excellent and solved several problems I've had. This is my second build; HMS Surprise-Mamoli was the first. After decades of plastic models, I switched to wood because I wanted a change of material and history topics. The pictures show the current state of things. The spars are also done. I'm waiting for a set of pre-built sails to arrive from Europe. I want to attach them in furled position to the spars and then mount the spars.
