  1. In 1577 Francis Drake left Plymouth on board the Pelican along with 4 other ships to sail through the Megellan Straits and explore the lands beyond. He was given unofficial backing from Queen Elizabeth Ist to also attack any Spanish ships that he might encounter, something he did with great success. On the 20th August 1578 whilst passing through the Megellan Straits he renamed the Pelican to Golden Hind to honour the expedition's main patron, Sir Christopher Patton, whose family crest was a Golden Hind, a female Red Deer. Drake arrived back in Plymouth in September 1580 having sailed around the world with a large booty of treasures and spices. Queen Elizabeth earned enough money from this venture that she was able to pay off all her debts and she decreed that the Golden Hind was to be kept at Deptford on the River Thames as a "museum" ship where she remained until being broken up in 1650. A replica ship was built in 1973 and has travelled around the world several times and is at present moored at St Mary Overie Dock on the south bank of the River Thames next to London Bridge. I plan to build this model based on this replica and had hoped to travel to London before Christmas to photograph the ship before visiting my Parents in Kent for a few days. Due to the Covid lockdowns this wasn't possible but fortunately my Daughter is at University in London and lives near to London Bridge so she has taken some photos for me. I have built an OcCre kit before and I do like them, the wood is good quality, I find the instructions fairly easy to follow and the various fittings are mostly good as well. Here's what you get in the box. Cheers Andy
  2. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. My next project will be the Golden Hind by OcCre, I am going to start a build log soon. Cheers Andy
  3. My name is Andy and I have been building models for about the last 50 years since my late Uncle got me an Airfix Spitfire when I was about 7 years old. Having built mostly plastic models I now want to concentrate on wooden models, I find wood much easier to work with than plastic and I've always been impressed by ship models especially sailing ships. I recently completed the St. Gabriel by Master Korabel which I found to be quite a challenge. Cheers Andy
