I have spent the time reading through this trail from the start to finish and must commend Toni for not only the tutorial but also helping starters with their questions. Certainly has explained why I didn't get the finish I was hoping for with my current build of AL's HMS Bounty's Jolly Boat. Thanks to all contributors whose questions helped me understand the techniques and terms. So I have decided to buy the Model Shipways Shipwright 3 Kit Combo which I can purchase locally and avoid the international shipping costs (click and collect so no delivery cost) to improve my skill level. When I start where would I post the build log? And finally tips that I learned from a master painter that may be of use to somebody. When painting more than one coat you can keep the brush from drying out by wrapping in cling wrap (he did this at the end of each day and only cleaned the brush when finished with that colour). When cleaning the brush he rinsed it vigorously in a bucket of water and then left in a sugar soap solution before giving it a final wash out. The bristles on his brushes were still soft and pliant after much use. I leave my brushes in the solution overnight before final clean and dry and keeping good so far.

One of the "tricks" I learned from my planking attempts with the Saint Malo and am going to use again on the Jolly Boat is to trace the shape from the 1:1 picture that Artesania helpfully provide and then to use this to make a simple planking jig by lightly nailing along the hull line at appropriate intervals into a scrap piece of plywood and then using a planking strip to add the nails on the other side of the plank in the spaces between the first nails necessary to hold the plank while it "sets" into the required shape. I found that after a 5-minute hot water soak and then couple of hours in this jig, the planks held their shape and made gluing a whole lot easier. Tried to attach a couple of photos of what I have just done but for an unknown reason the upload failed. A simple and cheap work around. Hope this helps somebody else having trouble. Cheers, Clive

Glad I found this. Saw it on a video of a build of the HMS Bounty Jolly Boat from Artesania that I am about to start on and was what led me to join MSW. Are there any kits still available? Anyone from Down Under started on this?

I guess like many I have thought about making wooden model ships for many years but never got around to it with life's demands. Now almost fully retired I have started on my new challenge. I have just completed the Saint Malo fishing boat from Artesania and we learn from our mistakes and I can say I learned a lot. Not ready to move from the Beginner's level I am about to undertake the HMS Bounty's Jolly Boat also from Artesania. Love the detail in their kits and the spares they throw in to replace those fiddly bits somewhere on my workshop floor. Started on the Corel Yacht America but stalled that at the sail stage. No sewing machine in our house so will come back to that at some stage maybe! The model shops I have been to near me seem to be phasing out of wood kits in favour of the plethora of plastic kits available. Hopefully I can share some things I learn along the journey that help others struggling with their builds.
