The mainmast lower shrouds and futtock shrouds are rigged and rattled. (832 clove hitches). Yes I counted them.  This completes the main mast rigging except for the upper mast back stays. I have attached them to the masts but did not complete them at the other end. Since they terminate at deadeyes in the mizzen channels, they will get in the way when working on the complex rigging of the mizzen mast. I will finish these after the mizzen is in place and fully rigged.
Next up is construction the of the mizzen mast.

The mizzen mast with the lower crossjack installed and rigged. This yard will not have a sail and is used primarily to secure the lower end of the mizzen topsail, and that will be the next step.

I have been mixing black ink into the Lepages Carpenters glue with no problems noted over a couple of years so far.

I am very careful using putty, as my father said once "use it with moderation"
Attached you find my current build build, one of the sides has gotten a treatment of putty.

I had to add with material on the sides of the bulkheads as they were much thinner than the material list stated. I used basswood for this.
However I added on with wood at the edge level and about 1cm inwards, didn't see the purpose of covering the whole bulkhead.
It's not as porous as balsa and can handle CA glue much better as well.
As for the filler I used 3/16 basswood against bulkhead and false keel then added with a balsa block. Once that was dried, I "painted" the balsa surface with diluted Titebond I, this way the combination of CA and Titebond I will have plenty of grip area.

Tell you what!I used a plank bending tool that came with the Swift and it worked very well on the Mahogany planks!Did not even have to wet them!

    Phil,

As has been said many times before.... go buy your own curling iron.  The Admirals don't appreciate us messing with their "tools".  Better yet, find the one of the Admiral's you want and go buy her the new one and swap.  Small price to pay for "peace in our time".

Ulises is correct.  For hardwoods, they need soaking.  Exceptionally hardwoods like ebony will need repeated soakings and bendings.

The curling iron is my favorite method also, as noted above by Mark. This plank was bent this way dry. It was a soft wood mind you, so I guess soaking may be helpful on harder woods.

Turns out, just soaking the planks in warm water for 5 min works well!

My personal favorite is an old curling iron..  soak the planks and bend it using the heat from the curling iron.

Phil, do a search on this area using the keywords "bending" and "planks".  There's lots of methods.  I found 9 topics using those terms..

Ok, 2nd try at this post. In another thread I had to host the images, in this on seems like I have to upload. Anyway, the kit arrived today, and my initial impression was there are fewer parts and pieces than what I was imagining. So here are the pictures....hmm guess I need to sign on via a computer as I don't seem to be able to upload from my tablet.  Edit: Well after I got on my computer I was able to use my hosting to link the images...so here they are:

Last Night I did Manage to squeeze in a few hours, so I installed the transom, beefed up the seat section behind frame 4 (this helps keep everything square) added the keel strips and stared fairing the rabbet line. Here are the results

Today I did manage to get a few hours in and finished up the Rudder area, (A standard wood tooth pick works well) I then Started to install
the frames and breasthook. Here are the results

The first thing I would like to do , is to have a working rudder. I went back to the Chapelle drawing and added the divit ( for lack of a better term)at the end of the keel. I then Figured out the center line for the Rudder, and removed a 1/8" slot in the keel. I then made up 2 pieces of 1/8" to fit against frame #4, this will make the transom stronger and at the rabbit line I can then blend in the Keel strip. Here are the results

I sincerely hope I fail to disappoint but this is my first attempt at such a thing. I like to work all the mechanics and problems out my way but will always welcome suggestions.

The masts and tressles are made of Tasmanian Oak which is readily available here and quite strong.

More pics, that is a 12 inch rule behind the mizzen mast.

Okay, Spent another 5 hours, Finished first planking,,    And sanded and fixed any dips in shape of hull with heavy duty filler.. Would rather build up than sand off too much... Amazing how strong the hull feels now its closed up..

I have cut up some "Blackbean" (Tropical rainforest hard-wood)     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castanospermum

....To make my false keel and rudder etc..   Very happy with how it is progressing and it feels really nice running your hand along the hull..  Thank you all for your support so far..

A question while i am here, Do most of you make your rudder to be able to move? It doesn't say much in kit, but does say to drill hole through deck for tiller?  Regards Ollie

Thanks guys, this makes perfect sense to me, the plans said to do it afterwards and i was scratching my head.. I can see that experienced builders, pretty much throw the plans in the bin.. I'm not knocking the kit at all, just has some vague moments and I am so glad to have this forum to steer me in the right direction.. I could have bought the in depth dvd but i'm a glutton for punishment... And i like the way you guys roll.

About ten hours since last mention.. I have almost finished the first planking and i have probably made some errors in the way i did stealers I have learned heaps and am thinking the second planking should be easier in some ways. It bends and twists quite easily obviously.. Putting faith in myself

I'm keen, i'm excited, learning and happy to get onto the next stages by the weekend. My extra lot of deck planks arrived today so things are rolling in the shipyard... Ollie

Hi all, still here, still plodding away at my first ever planking, learning heaps.. I have added garboard planks and starting to get my head around how to finish keel and rudder post etc... Any personal preferences in putting keel  before second planking or after?  Enjoying it and taking my time as advised..  Thanks all, Ollie

About 4 hours since last mention of time.. Well i have been plodding away at first layer planking and learning lots, didn't realise it was such a process.. I am aiming at a plank each side after work and maybe two like today.. Lots of other duties call.

You may notice i added my first stealers as it is already getting pinchy at stern..

I am enjoying the challenges, glad i got a beginners kit    Happy crafting all Ollie

Now I am just working on some smaller items for deck etc..   I am putting together anchor winch..  I tried fitting the ratchet wheels and they were not quite round, made the mistake of trying to squeeze one with pliers and shattered it into four pieces.. Oops.. Not made of brass... They are a bit rough on the casting so repaired and sanded and repainted.. Must be made of cast alloy of some sort...

Now I am looking at instructions and I am pretty sure they have this built wrong in their diagram..  The handles should be attached to main shaft that holds anchor rope.. not the brass rod above that has lugs for ratchets... Turning that would not wind rope.. I assume the brass rod should have a handle to release anchor when needed.. Thoughts? Thanks all... Ollie

Thanks Tom, John ans S Coleman.  You guys are too kind

The cutting away of planks and epoxying of keel in place went really well.. It has made sure the mermaid is really strong..

I grouped multiple cutting discs on the dremel until i got to required thickness for my scratch keel..

Cut it out ever so carefully and dry fitted many times..

I feel i have really turned a corner now and i'm slowing down and thinking about the next few stages..  I wont be tree-nailing deck as i think it is too small a scale and im thinking about the planking and gun ports etc..

Also thinking about scuppers and if i should  do them or not..  probably just on the painted side...

Thanks for looking and commenting all. Ollie

Mark, Harvey, John, Popeye, and Matt,  thanks for your kind words.

Yes Matt the translucence did surprise me a little because the apple wood was quite dense. I measured the thickness and it was scraped down to .005" which in scale is still way to thick. if it were blown up to full size it would be 2.5 inches thick.

I cut the curve out with a pair of regular scissors and then the curl by pulling between my index finger and thumbnail. the hardest part was getting the glue on. I used a dental pic and put the glue in the tip of it, I could have used a pin as well I suppose.

Once the glue was good and set I used a tiny sanding stick with 600 grit and gently stroked back and forth lengthwise to get them down to the right size above the deck I also used it to shape the transom once it was glued on.
