Sorry to hear of your mishap but now you have got me worried , I had problems getting the AO sheets printed and went ahead anyway .Am hoping to get them to-day so will need to check .At least it,s only ply but it,s the
time wasted that would annoy me .You were better to find out now than further down the line .

Hi all , after a brief panic about springy planks i finally got them sorted hopefully and although i might have to replace a few planks i decided to go ahead and varnish in the hope that sealing will possibly help prevent any more . Plus im impatient to see how a coat of varnish will affect my color scheme . thankfully it seem alright to me you all can make up your own minds . Itook the pic under lights and dosent really show the correct color but close enough ,might try tomorrow in daylight  .It,s funny how the varnish hides some things and highlights others , brings out the individual planks but also highlights glue stains etc ,but will clean up further before second coat

i only varnished to the third wale as still have minor repairs to do above

Not a springy plank in sight ,,,yet ??

Although it can,t really be seen here ther is now a yellowish tint to stripes between wales

the wales and the keel are made from the same wood although it dosn,t look it but there is a big variation in the color of the strips and some strips vary greatly even over there own length  ,Sorted a few but then decided the variations would add to the look ,could be proved wrong ??

Relieved to be close to finishing the main hull although still a fair way to go before installing the main deckand there,s still the windows to sort out ,but have a few idea brewing

Finally got port linings finished on one side ,very tricky but after my previous statement i decided to give it my best effort .Im happy but not really looking forward to the other side although im waiting on more wood before i start so might make a few gun carriages for a change .

Would love to try a coat of varnish on the finished side to see how the colors come up and for protection but have read so much about glue not sticking on varnish im afraid to as i still have plenty to glue on the upper hull , i think i better hold of a while longer!!!, plus i discovered an odd springy plank and a few minor repairs needed on upper bow planking
I redid my gun carriage to get it sitting at a better level and think the mark 2 will probably surfice

Was tempted to order chucks carriages but thought i,d give a go myself and now that i have a design im happy with ill make up a few jigs for mass production , i think i need 20 odd thankfully much less than the cc kit

the rings and cannon etc will be blackened but not sure how yet ,i bought a kit for this but  can,t find it . will try it out when i do   . might change the rings as i think they look slightly big ?? these are bought ones and i can make up smaller if i need to , any opinions welcomed !! when wood arrives i will try darker wheels although the pine ones don,t look to bad .

It,s been a while since my last post . Work ,life and if i,m honest a bit of a lull in interest has meant progress has been slow .
Excuses over ,i have finally sorted out the chainplates ,after waiting 3 weeks for an out of stock strap i decided to make my own ( thanks Paul ) . After a couple of attempts i used the straps provided , the pic will explain better than i can

I,m happy with the result and think i might leave the brass pin heads as they are rather than blacken them as was the plan ?

Also fitted a few strips ,rails ,not sure of correct name , I tried to make the currly bits without success so made it up as i went along ,they aren,t that noticable anyway ?

A couple more pics to show anything i forgot to mention

As a change and prep for the next stage i started making the mast platforms ( again not sure of correct name  ). I sanded the ply provided covered it with 0.5 cherry and then scratched everthing else from Dibetou , i think the contrast in these 2 woods works ?

I,m beginning to think 3 years for this build was being a bit hopefull but after every low comes a high so maybe progress will improve soon ????

Finally got the first planking finished. Reasonably happy but as usual if i were to start again i would do it slightly differently . I started at the bottom and worked upwards then moved to top and worked down partly i was trying to figure the run of planks for the second planking ,and as you can see from the pics this meant i had to use a lot of half stealers (i think thats what you call them) but this was a good way to learn  ,However i would like to avoid these as much as possible in my next planking if only for looks  Am hoping that by tapering the planks from the start and planking from the keel to the lower wale i can avoid most of them , intend then planking from the lower wale upwards using it to cover any change or joints in the run of planks .  Am open to any opinions or suggestions on this plan ,please feel free !!!     As you can see from the pics i have only scraped the hull at this stage and hope to improve it somewhat with sanding and fillers ,but need to move outside for that process.I think some of the soaked planks shrank a little when dryed out (thats my excuse) but fillers will cure that   .The gun ports still need a lot of cleaning up and am trying to figure out if i can line them before my second planking ,again any advice welcome , must experiment before deciding . As you can see from last pic the grating and stairs problem are solved, now need to fit cannon ball racks and scratch my carriages to finish the lower deck before installing the top one ,which i will have to split now to fit in .Still wondering about windows but plenty of time yet . I know i complained a lot about this kit at the begining but its quickly growing on me and from reading other logs no kit is without problems , maybe it was value for money after all???

been wondering about how to simulate the window frames as there are no etched frames included in the kit .Very hard to get wood strips fine enough so thought on thread  .Did up a couple of samples and want HONEST opinons on what you think ? the one on the left is 0.25 and i think too fine .the right is 0.5 which seems better its also covered with a strip of light polythene (the bag the sheet of acitat came in )..look forward to any opinions??????

Decided i would try fitting steps in one grating and it worked out ok so will do the other one as well as a break from planking,     Wood looks a funny color in pic but looks better in real . Had been planking from the bottom but now changed and working from the top down using this layer to try and figure out the best way to go about the final planking ? Been thinking about window frames and how to get something small enough , newest idea is to try thread , havent seen it mentioned before and wonder if anyone has tried it  might do some experimenting to-morrow

Fantastic work as usual and i can,t wait to begin planking ,my favourite part .Although i have never done it single plank, so many instructions and pics will certainly be a big help .

Ok , i think i have seen enough . I,m in . My not so recent attempt at the Triton POF and several return attempts has convinced i need to learn more before attempting such a complicated project without instuctions and tools so the" Winne" sounds like the perfect project . Part of my problem is lookin for shortcuts and not following advice so hopefully with so many other builders and off course the masters advice i can settle myself to lisen to my superiors and do as i,m told . My plan is to do a complete scratch build from the plans although some parts , eg carving may be beyond me . I do have a fair bit of pear wood in stock from my triton efforts and wonder how that would look in this build ?  I,m not a fan of painting and again this could cause some problems ,but will look into diff colored woods before i begin . Will take a couple of weeks before i set up a build log but lookin forward to joining this happy group . Standards are high but thats the way to learn i guess . look forward to seeing u all soon .Oh btw    Chuck your a genius.................

I i had taken a bit more care with makin the frames it would have made things easier later on ,but i still had it in my head that i would start from scatch again . All i can say at this atage is i have learned quite a bit in a short time and know i will need to learn a lot more before i finish . While waiting for planking to dry i started the bottom deck and as the pic shows it will need some parts replaced to square it . I hope to be able to work with the frames as they are ,with a lot of sanding and a few alterations . The deck frames and keel are the only pear wood i have used and must say it,s a pleasure to work with besides the oak ,plus the tight grain is a lot more realistic looking . The planking and thick stuff are from old stock rather than waste better woods

Frames all glued in and now preping for fairing .I noticed a few of my frames slightly out of line from port to stardoard (left to right ) so took the precaution of adding small spacer blocks to keep everything in line before fairing , added advantage of making the whole frame a lot more solid . Found a simple solution to supporting the bulkhead extensions (sticky up bits ) ,some old stiff packing foam ,with the added advantage of supporting the hull when upside down for fairing .Again some pics ..in no paticuliar order .

Tks all for lookin in.  I am taking pics on an i-pad and it seems to distort the colors quite a bit , but u get the general idea . Still can,t figure how to get pics in correct order and add text in between so forgive me if it seems a bit muddled at times . My naming of individiual parts may be a bit basic at times so bear with me if i mention " pointy bits " or " curved thingies " as i try to explain myself . Enough confessing !!!!
I haven,t managed to find anywhere local that can print those humungous A0 yet (another advantage of living in the sticks ) so took a chance and went ahead with adding the stem knee and keel assembly . Only variation to Chucks excellent instructions was that i glued the curved section of rabbet to the stem, and then fitted this to the ply bulkhead former ,meaning that any trimming to fit the curve came off the ply rather than the pear stem. Everything seems to have worked out ok . I must say this is a very clever and simple way of forming the rabbet line which is something i have struggled with before . Thanks Chuck .!!! Although as the pics will show i also did a few other variations . I used 0.5 mm brass wire to simulate the bolts on the keel and i used a strip of almost but not quite black wood for the false keel . I do like the contrast of different woods and as the build progresses this may become a habit , Managed to set up the build board and made a few of Chucks brackets which work great and easy to make .

Tks for all the likes folks ,some times i will need encouragement . I made up the bow section from pear and although it may not be to everyones taste i love the look of natural wood grain , this has just been given a coat of sanding sealer for some protection and again i,m pleased with this type of finish

Quick couple of pics tto show progress , Still nothing glued but all cleaned and fitted to what will be the rabbit line , i thought it better to do this before fitting the raddit and hull? ,which will come next with build board .

lol ,,well that didn,t go to well maybe a bit of bouble clicking going on as well . Anyway nothing u don,t already know .Prit used to stick ,i find works well and is easy to remove . I didn,t try to cut to close to the line with the bandsaw and again when cleaning up on the bench sander tried to just leave the line on . Stayed of the line when cutting the slots due to my thinner plywood ,although am wondering if too tight a fit could restrict room for glue so left a clean sliding fit . Also left the bottom of the frames slightly proud to leave room for final fitting to rabbit.  Am thinking they would be a lot easier filled and shaped before the keel etc goes on  . won,t be gluing anything utill everything pre fitted . The reference marks on the frames are scribed with a blade and then marked with a pencil , just in case anyone thinks they will disapear when i remove the paper . Must admit i,m enjoying this project so far and look forward to following everyones progress

Mike , tks for lookin in ,your build is a gem . i appreciate your concern but i still feel that as this part of the build will not be seen  i can fill out out when and if necessary . i,m probably wrong and have been before but time will tell . Let,s face it this model will not be on public display and as someone said it,s the journey that matters ..I live in hope !!!!!  Worst case senario i have to start over so i,m always learning !!!

Gregory ... I,m a farmer by trade ,,an inch means nothing to me ,lol

Bruce .. The amount of ply it takes for this build i would need the bed as well as the table , then she would be happy . I live in the sticks with limited local suppliers and past experience from online buying has left me wary . Problem now is nothing is like 50 years ago .All to do with cost i assume ?

Morning all , As i know u are like myself and enjoy plenty of pics i thought i,d post progress so far . I went ahead with the 5.5 ply which in fact is 5.4 -5.7 so the admiral got to keep the bed after all !!  This is just the basic stuff and how i did it ,no doubt there are better/ different ways so feel free to offer advice or opinions , i,m open to all and any suggestions . Sry pics not in order, i need a refresher course .

Best i can get is 5.5 mm . Cut a few today and it,s much better quality in my limited experience . Would u consider it safe to continue for sake of 0.5 mm ? . all ply here seems to be less than 6mm .

Seems to have worked . So first question . Bought a sheet of ply yesterday from my local supplier . we work in mm here so i asked if it was 6 mm which should be 1/4 . he assured me it was just short of 6 mm but on cutting a few pieces last nite i diccovered it was only 5 mm ,plus i think he said it was Chinese and to be honest i don,t think it,s great quality . would ply of 5mm or a good 3/16 cause problems to overall build as well as possible warp issues down the line .Don,t want to start off doomed from the beginning . Will search further afield today to see if i can find something better but just wondered if the 1mm could cause diffs later on ?
Well at least i have made a start, and find those excellent build logs full of usefull info .
