Would anyone know the purpose of the white circle in the center of the the thwarts on the Model Shipways New Bedford Whaler? The photo is one of the actual 1:2 scale whaleboats at the museum.

Last week I talked to the resident go-to person for this kind of question at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Generally, the half scale Lagoda itself was gilded a bit more than the average whaling vessel. Also, the white circles may have meant nothing other than what was desired by the painters at the time.
