Hi guys,

When using Swiss Pear, I noticed that it easily develops nicks/dings when I hit it against the table or other things during planking (Yup, I'm quite clumsy at handling fragile objects  ). Is Castello Boxwood any tougher/more resistant to damage? Thanks very much.

Best regards,

Aldo

Yes, Castello is considerably harder. Pear needs to be handled carefully. One can get small dings out by applying water with a brush to them. Water will swell the wood locally and usually get the ding out. Sometimes, repeated application is needed Of course, it will mess up any finish on the wood, if present, and you'll have to refinish. Being careful is a better strategy.

Thanks for the info Druxey, I'll try out Castello and of course, follow your advise on taking extra care. I figure it's high time I do some serious 5s and take out the clutter of tools and other obstacles from the work table :)

Castello Boxwood firmer and fragile (and more expensive) wood, well is suitable for a carving. Swiss Pear softer and viscous, is damaged quite easily, but from it the beautiful covering of the hull and deck details turns out.

Good Castello Boxwood substitute is the Brazilian maple (paomarfim) - close mechanical characteristics and color.
