I once herd that rope coils lying on the deck of a ship had to be coiled in a certain way. Is this true and if so which way and why?

Most rope was 'laid up' or made right handed, that is the twist went from bottom left to top right. Coiling clockwise was thus both kinder to the rope and the coils formed more easily. Incidentally, most coiled lines were normally hung off the deck from belaying pins, which kept them out of any water that led to rot.

Coiling clockwise is also the natural coil for a right handed person.

Being left handed, does this mean then that I've been doing this 'unnaturally' all these years?

Kester - remember that as the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, only left handed people are in their right minds!!

As for ropes, if you coil a right handed rope anti-clockwise, it will kink when you run it out!

Kester... It means that when I go to throw a heaving line that has been coiled by a south paw...it will run out like a rats nest.... That event is usually followed by loud cursing...some mild embarrassment and a search for the culprit.....

True - although my wife wouldn't neccessarily agree with the first assumption!

Andy,

It's even worse if the line doesn't reach the quay in the first place – and no searching is neccessary! :(
