Hi all,

The kit arrived today (along with a lot of 'toys' for building it) so I suppose I'd better start a build log.

Firstly it's going to be a laborious task in many ways because the instructions are very detailed if you're fluent in German but very limited if you aren't. Well thankfully I can ask for directions, order food, order beer and ask if a hotel has any beds in German so I'll be fine.

The quality of the wood looks to be very good, 3mm ply for the keel and 5mm for the bulkheads but any flex in the keel can be removed up to a degree by installing the deck and pinning it to the bulkheads when I've got the keel held in a straight line. Well that's what worked for me before so why shouldn't it work now?

First job tomorrow is to check everything is in the box and use a pen to mark part numbers on everything before it gets detached from the sheets and then dry fit the bulkheads and deck to see what we've got. Tonight I've got to walk my 5 month old Labrador pup to the pub and have a beer then consider wrapping Xmas presents for my granddaughters though that'll probably be postponed when beer induced build fever catches hold of me 🤣

Photos to follow at some point.

That's a big cutter! Well be nice to see this one build, have fun! :)

It looks much smaller scale if you go by the length of the keel so I’m not convinced it’s the 1:25 the manufacturers say it is but initial views can be deceptive.

I’m sure I’ll alternate between really enjoying the build and swearing at it for hours but that’s the point of it really, I want something that’ll be fun but equally challenging.

The Krick Alert was the very first model I did that put me on a path to where I am now. My local model shop told me that they were asked by the manufacturer to find someone who could build these models and write the instructions in English, as they were only in German (Alert and Gulnara). This led to my first job in the industry!

Alert was a very nice kit at the time (1994), very high-quality parts, from what I remember (no pics unfortunately) It isn't the 1777 large cutter Alert, but more a generic early 19th Century 'Revenue Cutter', the lines of which I have since seen in quite a few other similar kits with different names.

The build has started. I’ve dry fitted all the bulkheads and the deck mainly to make sure I’ve got everything in the right place and if needs be I can still take it apart and file/sand anything that isn’t  correct. The good news is that everything is a tight fit and it lines up.

It will certainly benefit from having the deck pinned with nails while the glue sets because of the curvature of the deck and the bulkheads need setting at the correct height because one of two are maybe 0.5mm down on the height of the spine but nothing serious.

so far no complaints 👍
