A new video about soldering versus silver brazing

I conducted a few brazing experiments with a small and large torch to see how they performed on small and large diameter wire.

This video includes annealing metal wire, how to make silver soldered eyes for hooks, and a few other suggestions and tips.

In particular, I try to show how tiny joints can be silver soldered using 'pellets' of silver solder.

Jay - I have used a similar setup in making the eyes, bands, and lugs on Bluenose as the last section you showed using the small torch and silver solder.  The only difference is that I am using silver solder paste that includes the solder and flux so they can be applied at the same time.  It is amazing how strong those silver soldered joints turn out.

Bob, where did you get that paste? It sounds good, because handling those little pellets is not easy.

I love your videos. Yes, they are informative, but they are also very well produced.

 

Micro-mark sells the silver solder paste that Bob mentions. It comes in a small tube.

Jay - I bought the paste from Amazon.  One tube goes a long way in this line of work.

I was curious and did a Google search. Found the Amazon link but decided to go a step further. In the past I found that Amazon has pretty good prices but they apparently make their money from the 'shipping and handling' charges.

I placed an order with Micro Tool for the same item with a bit less charges.

I'll compare and let you know when I try it.

I might add here that the price difference can be significant.

The 'solder it' tube at Micro Mark is $9.95. Amazon wanted $7.81 for that tube.  At Micro Tools it is $5.95 for the same item.

 

A pair of forceps or hemostats (straight) is $10.95 at Micro Mark (item 21110). At Micro Tools $1.68 (item 650FS). 

 

I have not dealt with Micro Tools before, but I will see how it goes.
