@macbride Posted March 3, 2014 Author #32 Posted March 3, 2014 Placed the first hull plank below the bulwark. not perfect but not terrible. My fear is in the subsequent plank placement. It's easy to visualize how the planks line up at the bow, but the stern is way different, and there is virtually no guidance in the instructions. Here is the stern/transom prior to bulwark placement: It's hard to picture how the planks will transition from just under the bulwark further down. Any advice? Also: the instructions do not mention making a rabbet, but should I do that? A picture of the finished boat (a view of the stern end) would be sooo helpful, but I haven't had any luck finding such an image. Thanks for any insight! Andy Quote

I beveled the bottom of the transom so that it lies on the same plane as the filler pieces forward of it. The planks will attach to the lower edge of the transom. I cut a rabbet on mine. So far it's making it easy to get a clean-looking edge on the stem where the planks attach. I'm sure there have to be other ways to get a good, even joint there without cutting a rabbet. Being new myself, I just don't know them. Hopefully, someone will chime in. @macbride Posted January 23, 2015 Author #55 Posted January 23, 2015 Steve, The kayak I'm finishing is a Pygmy Pinguino Sport. I actually drove up to Port Townsend, WA and did their one week workshop where 6 of us took our kits from plywood to being about 2/3 done! It was in October, and I really enjoyed it. The paddle board is from CLC, which you're obviously familiar with. My next project is to build a double that I'm going to give to my parents. I went with the Wood Duck double for its stability and ease of entry. The models I've worked on are all beginner level 1 & 2 boats from Midwest Products, including the Chesapeake 17 kayak, Peterboro canoe, and a dinghy. They've been very nice projects for a beginner like me. chesapeake 17 Kaholo paddle board and the Pygmy Pinguino Sport: Looks like my Shenandoah will be sitting neglected for a while longer... How hard was it? And that's one beautiful paddleboard. I've seen plans for wooden surfboards that get me all hot under the collar too. One of these days...
