I have been modeling for about 20 years.  I have not found a good way to get paint to adhere to etched brass.  Does any one have a suggestion.

Thanks

Jack

Jack, I read a tip (on FineScale I think) that one person recommended - dip the items into blackening solution (quick dunk) - you do not need to need to blacken it, only to dull the patina of the etched brass.  They claimed this works very well - I have yet to try it?

cheers

Pat

p.s. I think this needs to be moved to the Painting forum

If at first you do not suceed, try, and then try again!

Jack, along the lines of the blackener, you could try dipping the brass in some dilute (1:1 or 2:1) white vinegar followed by a quick rinse in clear water. It should etch the brass enough to allow the paint to stick

My usual method:

- lightly sand with 400 grit paper

- light coat of primer (either use Tamiya spray metal primer, or Admiralty paint on metal primer)

- paint with colour of your choice.

Sanding or dipping in white vinegar (mild acetic acid) will both do a good job of prepping the brass for a good primer, like Keith suggests. You still may end up retouching the paint after flexing the etch brass after attaching it to your model. Use a very fine brush fir that.
