Hawaiian Sampan

This is a model of the "Waialua Beauty"-- a power sampan I saw at Hale'iwa Harbor some years back. I built it to the hull-lines of one shown in Harry Sucher's "Simplified Boatbuilding: The V-Bottom Boat" plate 33, with specific details, color, etc. from photographs of the original. Scratch built at 3/4"=1'.

Nice model, Harvey!

It's an interesting subject. I'm not sure where the term "sampan" comes in. Is that the actual name of the boat type in Hawaii?

This boat has very Japanese-looking features, like the beams with the faceted mooring posts and how they are lashed to what is probably another beam down inside the boat. If this is Japanese influenced, or really a sampan, then I would expect it to actually have a flat bottom. But, of course, that's just my guess, based on the general appearance.

In any case, it's a very interesting and very unique build – very nicely done!

Sorry for the late reply--  I only just found how to view and reply to comments.  These boats are/were built by Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.  Sucher's book gives a brief but clear history of these forms-- origin and later developments.  And yes, the term Sampan is applied loosely considering later developments of these types.  Thank you!

Harvey,

Here it is, nearly 4 years later, and this subject has come up again. Douglas Brooks (are you familiar with his work on traditional Japanese boatbuilding?) forwarded an email to me from someone asking about this type. I took the information you posted about the Sucher book and now looking into it a bit. Really glad you posted this build!
